Veteran scorer Daniel Briere didn’t want to leave Philadelphia. But he found a happy ending after his compliance buyout from the Flyers on the last two years of his eight-year, $52 million contract.
He agreed to a two-year, $8 million deal with the Montreal Canadiens. That is a nice payout for a 35-year-old forward who will also draw checks from Philadelphia for not playing there.
The Canadiens overlooked Briere's decline in production to make this deal. He scored just 22 goals in 114 games the last two seasons after he scored 60 goals in 152 games the previous two seasons.
Back in 2010, he led all playoff performers with 30 points. So he doesn’t mind the big stage.
He is also extremely comfortable with the media, which is no small factor in hockey-mad Montreal.
