New Jersey Devils czar Lou Lamoriello has his hands full keeping his franchise in the hunt despite ownership/financial issues.
Acquiring goaltender Cory Schneider from Vancouver was a nice move for the long haul. He will replace venerable Martin Brodeur and eventually get a long-term deal in New Jersey.
Lamoriello couldn't keep power forward David Clarkson from shopping himself in free agency, but he did keep franchise legend Patrik Elias with a three-year, $16.5 million deal.
Elias didn't want to play anywhere else. And Lamoriello didn't want to lose him.
When Clarkson opted to push the financial envelope, that made Lou's decision all the easier. Elias gained an opportunity to achieve Devil-for-Life status, like Brodeur.
"This year marks my 17th year with the Devils and its very special to be a member of one organization for my entire career," Elias said in a statement.
