So how many goaltenders do the Calgary Flames need, anyway?
Leland Irving stepped in when Miikka Kiprusoff went on injured reserve with a knee injury. He started Monday night’s game against the Wild.
Earlier the team signed Danny Taylor to a NHL contract to add some depth. Then the Flames also claimed journeyman Joey MacDonald on waivers from the Red Wings, too.
MacDonald was an odd man out in Detroit this season. He did solid work for the Red Wings last season (8-5-1, 2.16 GAA), but spent most of the season playing for Grand Rapids (11-11-3, 2.63 GAA) of the American Hockey League.
Meanwhile Kiprusoff has resumed light practicing, facing some shots from goaltending coach Clint Malarchuk during Monday’s game day skate. But he did not test the knee by attempting any butterfly saves.
Calgary will play 10 games in a 17-day span, so general manager Jay Feaster rounded up reinforcement. He won’t explain his rationale for adding a fourth netminder until Tuesday.
