Next month I am going to do something I haven't done since college. I will write a blog everyday in the month of May. It was sort of a dare by some friends and I think it's a challenge I will have no problem with.
The reason I don't write everyday is because there's just not enough time although I'd like to, I can't because I've become too busy. I'm busy with important life issues like scheduling vacation and trying to get onto the best island casino junkets errrr I mean worrying about tax day and when I will visit my relatives back east.
Enough about me, I want to talk about college basketball, specifically women's basketball. First of all congratulations to Baylor for winning. I would congratulate Notre Dame for getting to the title game two years in a row but they lost both games...ouch. Despite that fact, Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw had nice things to say about Brittney Griner..I think.
McGraw said, "I think she's one of a kind. I think she's like a guy playing with women. It's just there's so many things she can do that I've not seen a lot of women--well, really, you know, there's been some guards that had some skill like that. But as a post player, she's the best I've ever seen."
Uh Oh! No she didn't! Wow, "she's like a guy playing with women?" This is not another player or a drunk fan saying this, this is the opposing team's head coach! That is incredible that she would say that to a room full of media and of course she tried to take it back errrr I mean try to clarify her comments.
McGraw issued a statement through team sports information director Chris Masters. "I am disappointed that ESPN would so clearly take my comment about Brittney out of context. I would hope that it was clear to those in attendance at Tuesday's press conference that my comments were meant to be complimentary, and in reference to her style of play and her dominance in our game, nothing more."
"Any attempt by others to read anything more into that comment is wrong, malicious and incredibly insulting to Brittney, Kim [Mulkey] and the Baylor women's basketball program, and it's a poor attempt by some to try and take away from what was a well-played National Championship game. I have held, and continue to hold Brittney and the Baylor women's basketball program in the highest regard and I congratulate them on winning the title this evening."
So let me get this straight, you make the comments, the comments cause an uproar, so then you blame the media for the comments? Wait a second Ms. McGraw, just hold the hell up. You said, "She's like a guy playing with women" but if we repeat what you said then it becomes malicious and insulting? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.
By the way, ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz agrees with me. He said, "We aired Coach McGraw's comments from the post-game press conference in proper context. Many outlets were present and reported the story. Most importantly, none of this should take away from the tremendous seasons by Notre Dame and Baylor or the incredible championship performance by Brittney Griner."
Yeah it shouldn't take away from it but it did because this is what everyone's talking about. At least Brittney didn't take it personal. She said, "Definitely, I take it as a compliment", when asked whether she considered McGraw's comments a compliment. All I am saying is that if you make comments that you have to know can be misinterpreted then you should either own them or clarify your comments when you are making the original statement. Basically, take responsiblity for your own actions and stop blaming the media.
