Infielder Edgar Renteria does not plan to play this season and is leaning toward retirement, according to his agent, Barry Meister.

Renteria, 35, will not officially file retirement papers, Meister said. Instead, he will remain open to resuming his career, possibly even this season if he has a change of heart.

Two National League teams offered Renteria a minor-league contract, Meister said. But Renteria chose not to accept either deal.

“It had nothing to do with the teams,” Meister said. “It just had to do with the feeling that this might be the right time.”

Renteria, a five-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner at shortstop, enjoyed what Meister called an “unbelievable” career.

That career included World Series appearances with three different clubs – the 1997 Marlins, 2004 Cardinals and 2010 Giants.

Renteria, at age 20, hit a decisive, two-out single in the 11^th inning of Game 7 of the ’97 Series. Thirteen years later, he was Series MVP with the Giants.

In 16 seasons, Renteria batted .286/.343/.398 with 140 career homers and 294 stolen bases. He played for seven clubs – the Marlins, Cardinals, Red Sox, Braves, Tigers, Giants and Reds.
