We hear all the time about how Tiger doesn't handle the par 5's like he used to. And, as a fan, it is difficult to watch him lay up when you know there is a potential or eagle or birdie just waiting. But time and injuries have a way of catching up to the best of us and that is very apparent on Tiger's scorecard, especially on the par 5's. So, being the numbers nut I am, I had to go back and see just how much Tiger has dropped off on par 5 scoring. Because of either injury or insignificant playing time, Tiger's stats on par 5's were not detailed for 2008, 2010 and 2011. Under the statistical category Par 5 Birdie or Better, here is the breakdown from 2012 back to 1997. The percentage is how often he scored birdie or better on par 5's.
2012: ranked 26th at 46.80% on 95 of 203 attempts.
2009: ranked 1st at 56.77% on 109 of 192 attempts.
2007: ranked 2nd at 51.70% on 91 of 176 attempts.
2006: ranked 1st at 57.14% on 104 of 182 attempts.
2005: ranked 1st at 53.42% on 125 of 234 attempts.
2004: ranked 2nd at 54.58% on 131 of 240 attempts.
2003: ranked 1st at 59.55% on 131 of 220 attempts.
2002: ranked 1st at 57.68% on 139 of 241 attempts.
2001: ranked 1st at 61.22% on 150 of 245 attempts.
2000: ranked 1st at 61.89% on 164 of 265 attempts.
1999: ranked 1st at 57.83% on 144 of 249 attempts.
1998: ranked 1st at 52.70% on 127 of 241 attempts.
1997: ranked 1st at 56.32% on 147 of 261 attempts.
Makes you wonder how many first place finishes TW may have missed out on this year as a result of his performance on par 5's. He was never worse than second in that category, and then second only twice, since he joined the tour. I just had to see for myself. And now you know, too. Thanks again for reading.
