In one of my favorite movies of all time, I recall Denzel Washington proclaiming “this is Chess not Checkers!” No, he wasn’t talking about football, but he was correct. Just like “Money Ball” revolutionized the game of professional baseball, coaches like Oregon’s Chip Kelly and high school coach Kevin Kelley of Little Rock have the ability to revolutionize the NFL. Their seemingly unorthodox methods consistently translate into wins. Why? Because they know the math of the game, they embrace concepts like Loss Aversion when roaming the sidelines and barking orders. I personally believe in what these guys do. Football is ever evolving, yet for whatever reason in a league of copycats, no one is copying these new concepts.
These two coaches “get it.” Not to say that other coaches out there aren’t good coaches, but they certainly are much more conservative than these two. NFL coaches have to be the most conservative creatures on the planet!
Numerous articles have been written about these new concepts in football, but I found this one, entitled “How Oregon Coach Chip Kelly Can Spark ‘Moneyball’ Revolution In NFL” written by Tim Livingston very compelling. Check it out, heck forward it to an NFL or college coach or two if you know any.
