So Chip Kelly decided to bolt to the NFL after all. The Philadelphia Eagles held a press conference today to introduce him as their new head coach.
That’s fine. It is his prerogative. I don’t blame him for wanting to try his skills in the big leagues.
However, I do feel sorry for his star quarterback at the University of Oregon, Marcus Mariota. I wrote extensively last season about Mariota’s breakout performance for the Ducks as a red shirt freshman. With three more years of eligibility, Mariota, known as the “Flyin’ Hawaiian,” could be a major force in college football and a contender for the coveted Heisman trophy. But without Kelly’s high scoring, no huddle offense, Mariota’s stats and superstardom may take a hit.
We’ll have to wait and see if the Ducks hire another coach who can play to Mariota’s skills the way Kelly did. Hopefully they can and Mariota, along with both the Eagles and the Ducks, can be flying high next season.
