As the Oakland Athletics head into the Major League Baseball playoffs against the Detroit Tigers, one of their own is headed into some heavy heartache.
A's relief pitcher Pat Neshek and his wife Stephanee suffered a brutal loss as their 23-hour-old infant died mysteriously earlier this week.
The Neshek's had been celebrating Stephanee's pregnancy and impending delivery on their Twitter accounts. Then came the excitement when their son Gehrig was born Wednesday. Neshek was present for Gehrig's birth.
Less than one day later, though, the tweets turned tragic as Neshek noted online that his son had died. "Tonight my wife and I lost our first and only son 23 hours after he was born with no explanation," read his Twitter post.
While an autopsy is planned, for now the cause of death remains a mystery.
"Our hearts go out to Pat and Stephanee and we share in the sorrow of losing their young son," read the statement released by the A's to the Associated Press. "The entire A's organization will keep the Neshek family in our prayers and thoughts, as they try to come to grips with this tragic occurrence in their lives."
As Christians, and sports fans, it would be good for all of us to keep the Neshek's in our prayers.
