• Baffled by release of Brooks

  I am shocked that the Sacramento Kings released veteran guard Aaron Brooks today. Shocked and bummed. Nothing that the Kings do makes ANY sense to me. I liked Brooks. He was usually the replacement guard for Isaiah Thomas, often the 6^th man for the team. Brooks even started many games for the season during a period where Thomas was benched. It has always been a mystery to me while Thomas is lauded with all the hype and Brooks seemingly ignored. I always admired Brooks’ ability to pass the ball effectively and he had to be one of the assist leaders on the squad. So his departure is odd and discomforting.

  If the Kings want to release some people, they should start with their perpetually immature center, DeMarcus Cousins and their hapless coach, Keith Smart.

• What's in a (nick)name? Updated

  I learned of a couple of new nicknames for the Sacramento Kings players in tonight's game. I have added them to my list from earlier this season. The new names are in bold. Incidentally, I am not sure it is a good idea to have "Reke" as your nickname. "Reke," sounds the same as "wreak" which is not a compliment.

• Kings-sized fan

  I am grateful that NBA action returns tomorrow night when my Sacramento Kings will once again be on the court. They will likely lose and DeMarcus Cousins will probably get a technical, but I am used to those things. It will still be good to have awesome dunks, alley oops and air balls back in my life.

   The fact that I miss the Sacramento Kings, a truly mediocre team, after only a five day absence proves just how important sports have become in my daily routine. I am going to have to get actively into watching Major League Baseball this season, too, to help fill in the gap until football starts. I should be able to watch all of the regular season Oakland A’s games on my local sports cable channel so that will help. Plus it is usually easy to get my six year old excited about following a new sports team with me. Maybe we can even make the 90 minute drive to an A’s game this summer. That would be a fun family outing.

  No outings tomorrow night, though. I will be glued to the TV watching my beloved yet beleaguered Kings struggle through another NBA night. I can’t wait.

• He's a King but he isn't even acting very princely.

  DeMarcus needs a demerit.

  Sacramento Kings starting center DeMarcus Cousins leads the NBA with 12 technical fouls. The season isn’t even half over yet.  I could understand and forgive maybe one or two technical fouls, but 12! That is an obvious sign of immaturity. If he gets four more he faces an automatic suspension by the league. In his most recent technical DeMarcus used a choice word that rhymes with truck to insult an NBA referee. He was ejected at halftime.

  Since he isn’t seven years old and is only acting like he is, you cannot put him in the corner on timeout. You’re not his parent so you can’t spank him. If I were the Kings I would levy a hefty fine against him so he knows his behavior is childish and unacceptable. Then I would put him on the trade market. The Kings are a young team in terms of talent and age. They cannot afford to be a young team in terms of temperament.

  DeMarcus you are acting like a spoiled baby. It’s time you take your bratty behavior out of Sacramento. No more detention. No more demotions. No more DeMarcus.

• What's in a (nick)name?

  One way to judge how big of a fan you are for a particular team is how well you know the players’ nicknames. For my favorite NBA team, the Sacramento Kings, I can identify nicknames for more than half of the team members. Most of them I learned from watching all of their games with my family on our local sports channel.

  For six of the Kings I do not know if they have a nickname or not. If I were an NBA player I think I would want to have a clever nickname. It makes you more memorable and more marketable.

• Some foul shots are indeed foul

  We were down by one with no time left on the clock. I had been fouled at the buzzer. I was at the line shooting two with a chance to win the game. I was nervous but somehow I came through. I sank both free throws and we won the game by one point.

  Now, I was only in junior high at the time, but still it was a pressure filled moment.

  What I don’t understand is if I can come through at the awkward age of thirteen and hit a couple of crucial free throws, why can’t professional athletes who are paid millions to play in the NBA do the same?

  LeBron James, the premier player in the NBA with a championship ring to his credit for the Miami Heat, is often inconsistent shooting free throws. Dwight Howard, the starting center for the Los Angeles Lakers should be removed from close games in the fourth quarter because he is so awful at the foul line.

  Come on, people. They are called “free” throws for a reason. No one is guarding you. You have a clear shot at the basket. It isn’t a tough or long shot. As an NBA player you should be able to make a free throw in your sleep. Instead some players are awake but their free throw shooting skills are more like a nightmare.

  I’m not sure why coaches tolerate it. My favorite NBA team, the Sacramento Kings, lose a lot of close games. If they made their foul shots, though, their win-loss record would be much improved.  I’m tired of DeMarcus Cousins missing his free throws.

  Heck, pay me his salary and let me shoot them. At least I have a history of making them in clutch situations.

• DeMarcus' double doubles

  Double double toil and trouble.

  It sounds like a witch’s spell. But in basketball, a double double is a good thing. It means a player scored at least ten points and grabbed 10 or more rebounds.

  Tonight while watching the Sacramento Kings lose 85-69 to the Memphis Grizzlies, the announcers were making a big deal out of the fact that the Kings’ starting center, DeMarcus Cousins has had a number of games where he has achieved a double double. His season averages are approximately 17 points and 10 rebounds per game. He got 22 and 12 tonight.

  But if you are a starting center in the NBA, shouldn’t you be expected to achieve a double double? You’ve made it to the upper echelon of your sport. You are among the best of the best. Even if the NBA has become more of a shooting guard/power forward league, I would still think your squad would be able to count on the tallest guy on the team to get into double digits in both points and rebounds every game.

  I like Cousins. I don’t like his tattoos, as I’ve written about before, but I think he is a decent player. I just don’t think his double doubles should be a reason for celebration. They should be the norm.

  For Cousins, if there’s no double double, then there should be trouble.

• This special needs family needs the Kings

  My six year old son has autism, Cerebral Palsy and a host of other brain-related maladies. With his disabilities there are some behavioral concerns. He has difficulty processing anger and he suffers from sensory overload. So tantrums and non-compliant behavior are more intense than for the average youngster.

  Don’t get me wrong, he is a great kid. One of the ways we motivate him to work on his behavior and social interactions is through the world of sports. We watch a lot of sports in our house and “Bubba” as we call him loves every minute of it. He is especially fond of his momma’s team the Denver Broncos and our local NBA squad the Sacramento Kings.

  We have been to a few Kings games as a family and we watch every other game on TV. He is learning to handle the crowd noise and interact with other fans. Bubba loves to chant “defense,” play Nerf hoops during the games we watch at home, and cheer on his favorite players, DeMarcus Cousins and Isaiah Thomas.

  But now press rumors have the Maloof family relocating the Kings to Seattle for the 2013 season. AARGH! I am sorry but if they do that, I will take it personally. It will be devastating to the community. It will be devastating to my son and our family.

  Sacramento needs the Kings. And maybe more importantly, the Seiber family and their special needs “Bubba” need the Kings.
