Ten years ago today I skipped church and drove to Reno, Nevada to elope with my beautiful bride. It has been a wild and wonderful ride, enriched in a number of ways by the world of sports. The most obvious sporting influence on our marriage would be my wife’s rabid love for the Denver Broncos. For more than 25 years she has faithfully supported her team. What I love about her football fandom is that it has always been a rallying cry for our relationship. In good times and bad we have always been able to look forward to the next Broncos game or the next Broncos season. That cheers us up and gives us hope. Never underestimate the positive power of having something to look forward to. The Broncos have also been good to me and good for me in the gift-giving arena. My wife has a large collection of Denver Bronco memorabilia. Whenever an important occasion like a birthday or anniversary rolls around, I know I can never go wrong by adding to her Broncos collection. At Christmas and other special times of the year she almost always gets some more memorabilia from me. And she loves it all from garden gnomes to board games to bedroom blankets. Thank goodness the NFL has so many marketable products. I will never run out of gift-giving ideas. But my wife and our marriage and family are the best gift of all and I am grateful she loves sports as much, or maybe even more than I do.
