Movies can do more than just entertain. They can also educate. For those who don’t play sports, a depiction of a sporting event such as football in a movie can introduce them to the game. I never played competitive football beyond 5th and 6th grade flag football. But one of my first recollections of the sport, when I was 9 years old, is watching the 1976 Disney comedy Gus. Starring Don Knotts and Ed Asner, Gus features a field goal kicking mule. Yes, you read that right. Gus the mule is a more reliable kicker than even Legatron or Matt Prater. With Gus using his hind legs to kick super long field goals, he boots his team to success. Mason Crosby and David Akers, NFL kickers who struggled this year for their respective teams, could have used some coaching from Gus. If you’ve never seen it before, see if it is available on Netflix. You and your younger kids will enjoy it. And, like it was for me, Gus may be one of their first positive memories of a sport they will love for the rest of their lives.
