• Sports are always in fashion

  I’m not the person you want to get fashion advice from. I’m chubby and I almost always wear sweats or jeans and a baggy t-shirt. Even to church. But, I’m going to give you some anyway. Or at least comment on some fashion tidbits I’ve noticed recently as they relate to the world of sports.

  1)      Headbands are all the rage. It’s all RGIII’s fault. Griffin, rookie quarterback for the Washington Redskins, would always wear one in his postgame press conferences. People started talking about them. Apparently they were designer headbands. Who knew they made designer headbands? They bantered about RGIII’s headbands one day on NFL AM. Actually it felt like they devoted an entire segment to them but it probably wasn’t that long. It just felt like it was. Now I see headbands everywhere. I never noticed them before. Tonight while watching an NBA game it seemed like half the players were wearing headbands. I guess that is okay. I mean they do serve a purpose. RGIII is so influential not only can he handle hikes he can also hock headgear. Get him another endorsement deal pronto.

  2)      NBA dancers (or cheerleaders) change their outfits at least 10 times a game. Why? I mean I probably shouldn’t complain. They always look great in them, which is the point. But it is also the point that they look good in everything, that is why they are cheerleaders. So you don’t really need them to change clothes every timeout. Save some money. We’re going to pay attention to them anyway. We’re men.

  3)      The Sacramento Kings are sporting a retro 90’s jersey right now. I really like it. The Kings colors are purple, white and black. Purple is my favorite color so I am already predisposed to liking their uniforms. But the mid 90’s version has a black and white checkerboard design down both sides of the uniform. It is very cool looking against the purple. Again, as you learned in the first paragraph, I am not a fashion expert. But the old jerseys look snazzy. Since the Kings don’t win much any positive reason to watch them is appreciated.

  When it comes to fashion that’s really all I got. Be glad about that.

• RGIII needs some humility

  “I don’t feel me being out there hurt the team in any way. I’m the best option for this team. That’s why I’m the starter.”

  Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III (RGIII) spoke those words in his postgame press conference after the Redskins lost 24-14 to the Seattle Seahawks in the opening round of the NFL playoffs. RGIII was re-injured in the game and many are wondering if his coach, Mike Shanahan, should have pulled him once his injury became evident. That’s an important question. But I believe the bravado of Griffin’s comments pose an equally important question.

  RGIII’s boast reminds me of an earlier column I wrote on Joe Flacco, a column about pride coming before a fall. Or in this case after the fall since the Redskins lost the game and are out of the playoffs.

  As I wrote earlier, you want your quarterback to be confident. I get that. But not boastful.

  Proverbs 29:23 says “Pride ends in humiliation, while humility brings honor.” Based upon this Bible verse, I think RGIII should have stopped after his first sentence above. I don’t think it is wise for him to say “I’m the best option for this team.” He may believe that. In fact, I want him to believe that. But I think discretion would have you keep that sentiment to yourself and not share it with the world.
