After years and years of being a diehard sports fan, I have finally decided to take my knowledge, passion, and insight to the online sports community. I live and breathe sports and am looking forward to learning more of what sports blogging is all about. Enough about me though, now onto sports.
What a crazy time for football fans. Amidst the lifting of the lockout the league is seeing an unprecedented amount of roster moves being made.Teams are crunching numbers by cutting players and restructuring contracts in order to meet the new salary cap (which is at about $120 million.) I keep hearing these NFL "experts" harping about how much level the playing field may possibly be because of all the time missed by the players and all the roster turnover that is going to occur over the next couple weeks. This will lead to players not being in prime shape and alack of chemistry on the field. I think that if Shanny runs a tight ship and brings some guys in that will buy into what he is selling then the 'Skins can greatly improve as a team.
I am a diehard Redskins fan and although I can say I have never seen my beloved 'Skins make it to the Superbowl, the start of free agency is the equivalent of a super bowl for me. Now that the lockout is lifted, my fellow 'Skins fans and I will sit back and watch Dan Snyder cash out huge checks to undeserving and some deserving guys guys. The 'Skins are a team full of needs on both sides of the ball and with over 1500 free agents available they can greatly improve their chances at becoming a better team.
The most glaring need on the offensive side of the ball is the offensive line. We lack on depth first of which is crucial in a Shanny offense. Our offensive lineman need to be mobile in order to block for the zone blocking scheme. We averaged about 92 yards a game which is relatively good considering the lack of depth and talent which our offensive line has. The main problem was the QB's did not have time to sit back in the pocket and make throws. Our OT's are promising, Trent Williams will only continue to improve with time and IF Jamal Brown can stay healthy and play the way he did in the second half of the season than we should be alright. The biggest void we need to fill is the interior lineman. Lets be honest, none of our interior lineman can hack it. Weather it was Lictensteiger, Montgomery, or Rabach, they were all continually being beaten. Look for the 'Skins to look at a guy like Marshall Yanda or Darvin Adams, both of whom have ties to the Redskins Organization.
The next most glaring need is some playmakers. If our QB, regardless of who it is, gets a little bit of time to sit in the pocket than all he needs is someone to make a play once they get the ball in their hands. Santana Moss is our biggest play maker. If we could bring in another top knotch free agent like Braylon Edwards or a Sidney Rice, that would greatly free up Santana and more big plays would be made. We have added a bunch of young WRs via the draft which is a huge step in the right direction.
The last and perhaps the most intriguing question about that of what to do with Chris Cooley. He is approaching the last year in his contract and many people around the league feel this is the highest value he will have and to get the most for him while you still can. I like that thinking, especially with an unproven young, hungry, and talented guy like Fred Davis waiting to get his chance.
Time will tell, but lets hope Shanny and Bruce can fix this offense sooner than later.
