A Small Window into the Yankee World

Tonight's game was an absolute disgrace. I am very upset at the Yankee management tonight. Vazquez -- I don't know what to say. Is there something to say about him? I don't know how to approach this. I don't want to say I hate him because he's new to the year, but not to the team. I think that it's too soon to start pointing fingers, but Joe Girardi really shouldn't have this much faith in these guys this early in the season. Putting faith in Andy Pettitte, CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett etc. is a different story. However, if you see a starter struggling THAT MUCH, he needs to go. It's not a matter of if they'll work their way out -- you had the exhibition games to worry about that stuff. Exhibition games are over. If you wanna make it to the post season, you'd better start winning games as early as you can.

Tampa's starting pitcher, Price, was absolutely phenomenal. I'm not going to build an altar and praise him, but I love the way he presents himself. He just goes in and wants to get the job done. He hasn't even been in MLB that long, and he's that dedicated already? Damn it, can we NOT have a veteran like that? Forget about Pettitte and his determination, we need a presence like Price.

The one who I'm picking on tonight is Nick Johnson. I was not happy with him tonight. He's going through that "new guy" syndrome. I don't understand how this man can stand at home plate and not keep the ninth inning going. If we had a little rally going during the 9th inning, I would NOT be this upset right now. Brian Cashman, although we've had our differences, I'm afraid that you need to make an appearance in the clubhouse very soon.

Then again, none of this would be happening if Johnny Damon was here. But then again, THANK YOU, SCOTT BORAS FOR MAKING THE WORLD REVOLVE AROUND YOU.

I just wanted to say a word of thanks to my cousin, Jimmy. He kind of made me turn my thought process of Vazquez around. I read up on him a little bit and decided to listen to Jimmy for once. Thanks, dude. Love you like a brother.

Hi everyone, I'm sorry for being such a stranger for the past few months. I didn't report on the exhibition games as much because I don't really follow them as much. However, I follow the regular season/post season games. I am going to try to report everynight. Tonight's game is worth reporting on. There were so many things that happened tonight that absolutely infuriated me.

Okay, so the Yanks had a nice opening ceremony. Great starting lineup. I really think it was a great idea to keep Johnson in the second slot in the lineup. That was probably the best thing that Girardi did tonight -- possibly the ONLY good thing that Girardi did tonight.

I was EXTREMELY impressed with the first few innings. I give props to Jorge Posada -- he really started off the game with a positive attitude. He hit a home run and got the rest of the guys going. We got a few base hits from key players (Granderson...I am really beginning to like him...I LOVED THE HOME RUN!), and I see a lot of guys with a lot of power in their swing -- they're really showing that they are in the zone and that they're looking to kill the ball. It may not always be a good thing. In tonight's game, it wasn't. The affense tonight was flawless. I loved the way that everyone was playing "little baseball" in order to get the game going and to get some numbers for New York on the board.

It all went downhill from when CC started fatiguing. That's acceptable, it's the beginning of the season. He's not really used to pitching. It's the first game of the season -- I'll give him a break. However, Girardi should have NOT given him the benefit of the doubt just for that same reason. Girardi should have taken him out. It wasn't such a bad thing to put in Chan Ho Park, but it was a bad thing to do when he saw that the score was creeping up to what the Yanks had on the board. He should have put in Robertson for the long run.

Chan Ho Park was pretty bad tonight. I wouldn't deny that. THE ABSOLUTE WORST THING GIRARDI COULD HAVE DONE AFTER THAT WAS TO PUT IN MARTE. AND WHAT DID HE DO? HE PUT IN MARTE. I'm getting tired of repeating myself. Marte is NOT the go-to guy in a situation like this. Robertson has PHENOMENAL control over the ball. He would have kept us in the game! Marte may not have done a lot of damage, but Girardi should have known better.

I was so happy to see that Joba came in during the 8th inning and that Girardi decided to use Robertson. I think it was a good thing to see that because it gave Yankee fans hope that we actually were holding onto our seats for a reason. We believed that we could pull through -- the 2009 Yankees would NEVER have let us down in a game like this. I think we can all agree on that. I don't think that this season is the time to reflect on the 2009 season. We need to face the 2010 season and EMBRACE IT. This is going to be a season where the Yanks can't lay back -- we need to kind of prove ourselves YET AGAIN.

I'm sitting here, watching the postgame and shaking my head. I really hope that the Yankees are going to do a better job on Tuesday. I will be reporting on that game, too.

Another thing that happened today was that Francisco Cervelli got nailed in the head with a fastball. Zech Zinicola pitched for that inning. After it happened, Cervelli was rushed to the hospital. He commented later by saying that he would be resting for a few days and then he would be back in the game. I think he'll be alright. When I watched the m lkjg ujghbhkljlhukgcb replay, he ducked "into" the way of the ball. Unfortunately, it whacked him and rattled him a little. The Yankees want to take it easy with any head injuries, especially with Cervelli, because he is an addition to the team you really can't mess around with. With his catching abilities and his thought process behind the plate, the Yankees can't afford to mess anything up. This wouldn't be the first time Cervelli was injured. During the 2008 Grapefruit league games, Cervelli broke his wrist when a player on the Rays collided into him at home plate. Whether the collision was intentional or not is still unclear -- but one thing's for sure: The Yanks had him out for a while. They can't lose him again.

AJ Burnett, as of right now during this part of Spring Training, is working on his pitching. He's working on getting everything he had back last year. The winter break can do stuff to you, I guess. Girardi believed that he saw a lot of good things coming from Burnett on Saturday. Basically, this was just a practice round for Burnett. No matter how you look at it.

So, the third exhibition game was an eventful one! In the third inning, the Yankees were losing. Francisco Cervelli looked extremely impressive. He was hitting the ball HARD and trying to get a great hit. However, the one that is still doesn't look promising is Curtis Granderson. He did NOT look like he was on his game yesterday. However, I was extremely impressed with Hellickson, the young Tampa pitcher. He struck out Jeter and Teixeira in the third inning. He is going to be a good addition to Tampa Bay.

In the fourth inning, Chamberlain struck out one batter. Big deal. He was NOT impressive AT ALL yesterday. How could they make someone a starter when the potential is in the basement? Joba Chamberlain is a native of the Yankee Bullpen, not the starting rotation. I could say this until I'm blue in the face, but it won't matter because the Yankee Organization isn't putting their brain into this, apparently. The fourth inning wasn't a good one for the Yanks because they took out Chamberlain and put in the new kid, Kevin Whelan. Getting this kid was a good addition. He has VERY good potential to be a reliever. However, he needs to be tamed and controlled. He was a little wild on his pitches. He has a very good arm, and the pitches he makes are great. Apparently, they weren't great enough. Whelan was taken out of the game with the bases loaded because he worked himself into a jam that he couldn't get out of. The only funny part of that inning was that Nick Swisher tried to catch a foul ball in the Yankee bullpen, and he fell right in. It was definitely an embarrassing moment, but he got up and laughed, so I guess he and his ego are alright.

When the fifth inning rolled around, I thought I was going to have a tantrum, because Kei Igawa strolled out of the bullpen. I had to walk out of the room a little bit to calm down, because Kei igawa is NOT my favorite minor leaguer. He is a HORRIBLE pitcher. His overall performance was nothing to be applauded, but he got through the inning without opening another wound. That's all I can ask for from him because he is so erratic with his pitches, you never know what to expect. During the bottom of the fifth inning, Hernandez struck out Alex Rodriguez. After A-Rod, Cano got a base hit. Then, Swisher hit it a single, moving Cano to third base. Then, Cervelli got a hit, scoring Cano. To end the inning, Derek Jeter runs into a double play and we go into the top of the sixth inning.

In the sixth inning, the Yanks tossed in David Roberton. He was lights out. He got three consecutive outs and led the Yanks into the bottom of the sixth. Nothing happened in this inning (scoring wise), but the funny thing about this part of the game was that Girardi changed his game a little bit! He put in ALL minor leaguers & to see how they would do. They weren't effective this inning, but wait until the seventh inning!

In the seventh inning, Edwar Ramirez pitched. One play of the inning was made by Juan Miranda, the Yankee first baseman. He snatched the ball and threw it to third, keeping the runners back. Cervelli was replaced with Montero. Also, during the inning, Miranda fumbled the ball, causing someone to score. However, the highlight of the seventh inning went to all of the Yankee prospects that we have! Corona got a base hit. Because of a wild pitch from Ekstrom, Corona scores. Ekstrom was NOT on his game last night. It was very difficult for him to stay in the zone. Nunez got a double, Golson got a sac grounder and Montero scored. Miranda scored a double, getting two more runners in. Russo slapped the ball into right field and scored another run. By this point, the score was 8-6! The Yanks were REALLY starting a rally. Vazquez got a double and Russo scored, making the game 8-7! Graniack got a pop fly into left field, moving Vazquez from second to third base. Corona came up again for the second time that inning, grounding to the shortstop to end the inning with the third out. This inning really showed that these rookies aren't kidding. They are really trying to prove themselves. Hopefully we'll see more of them during the season, and hopefully they'll still have the same potential.

In the eighth inning, Grant Duff started off the inning for the Yanks. Shealy works a walk, Furmaniak got a two run hit, making the game 10-7. Another run scored. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Swindle pitched for Tampa. He struck out Weber and Montero. However, he left the game with what seemed to be an injury. To replace him, Rollins cane in. The Yankees did not score that inning.

During the ninth inning, Mosely came in. He walked the first batter, gave up a hit to the second batter, walked the third batter with the bases loaded and nobody out. He struck out the fourth batter, getting him out somewhat of a jam. Then, things went downhill. Furmaniak scored a run. Perez struck out. After Mosely was taken out, Bleich was put in. A Yankee grounded the ball to second, ending the inning.

One thing I heard when taking notes on the game yesterday was that Nick Johnson is doing absolutely fine. He's doing better than he was the day before. Joe Girardi said that if this was a regular season game, Nick would have been playing. However, since the games aren't really that important, he said that he'd like to keep Johnson comfortable and he would like to make sure that he's 100% alright.

Sorry for the vague explanation of the game on Friday. I did something a little different this time. I collected my own information from watching the game with my cousin, Jimmy, and my grandfather, on Friday. We all sat together and discussed the different players and topics concerning the Yankees. I wouldn't want to watch a Yankee game with anyone else!

The second thing to discuss for tonight is the second exhibition game.

CC Sabathia started the game today. Before the game started, he was very excited. He felt great and he was happy to be back on the mound. He explained that the Spring Training was a very good thing for him because he could finally move again and get back into the groove of things.

The Yanks didn't do too great today. They lost to their 2009 World Series competitors, the Phillies. Polanco singled in the first inning and in the second inning, Bocock got a single. Ozzie Chavez got a double in the seventh inning, scoring Juan Castro. Hoover got a double, and ended up on third base. His teammate, Berry was able to score. Valdez won by getting a single past Wilkins Arias.

The Yankee that pitched today was CC Sabathia. He did very well. Also, Segovia (a former Phillies pitcher), walked someone after CC was taken out. Although he did very well, he still thinks he could do better.

For the Phillies, Halladay made his Phillies debut today. He allowed no hits and two scoreless innings.

Nick Johnson was not in the lineup against the Phillies due to a stiff lower back. Although he hurt himself, he insisted and told Joe Girardi that he could play. To keep it state, however, Joe decided to scratch him for the Phillies game. We may possibly see him tomorrow against Tampa.

Also, the Yankees honored prospects in their system. Some prospects that were honored were Austin Romine and Zach McAllister. They were nominated for best pitcher of the year and best player of the year.

I'm sorry I didn't present a report last night! I'll be back tonight with two reports just for you guys (: I did not forget! There is one thing that all of you are DYING to know about -- my report on how the Yanks are doing during the Exhibition games! Especially the one on March 2nd, the first exhibition game of the season!

Curtis Granderson was amazed by how the Yankees celebrate their opening ceremony. He glanced up at the sky to see the two military planes fly overhead as a part of the ceremony. Shortly after the game, he joked with the media and said how his uniform was very different from what it looked like on a hanger -- it was extremely white and bright. However, everyone got the chills when Joe Girardi trotted to the pitcher's mound carrying the 2009 World Series trophy.

Granderson's first time up at the plate for the Yanks was not a great one. It was a beginning, let's just put it that way. Out of the four innings he was up at bat, he hit two grounders. It wasn't the best way to show a new team what you've got, but Granderson made a good point. His point was that the first time that you're up at bat is always interesting. You're still trying to figure out the opposing pitcher, you're still trying to get adjusted to the stadium, you're trying to figure out the best angle to hit the ball, and the pressure is definitely on. Today, Granderson was hitting between Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira. I guess we'll just have to see how good Granderson gets. I can't wait to watch him!

So, the Yankees won their first exhibition game 6-3. The Pirates brought pitcher Andrew McCutchen and Erik Kratz got the hits off of Jonathan Albaladejo yesterday afternoon. The new Yankee outfielder Colin Curtis got a three run home run in the 9th inning to give the Yankees a walk off win. I guess they're happening already! I wonder where AJ was with the pie? A-Rod hit a fifth inning single into centerfield. Then, in the 6th inning, Ramiro Pena got a home run!

For the Pirates, Paul Maholm started. He threw 11 pitches, all of them were strikes. Ross Ohlendorf (former Yankee prospect) struck out A-Rod looking during the second inning. Brian Bass threw a scoreless third inning, and DJ Carrasco made an appearance right after him.

For the Yankees, Chad Gaudin started. Hs threw 34 pitches. Out of the 34 pitches, 23 of them were strikes. After he pitched, Mitre relieved him, pitching two perfect innings. To finish off the game, Alfredo Aceves pitched to six batters, retiring all of them.

Cervelli was caught stealing second base after being hit by a pitch. Jamie Hoffmann made a diving catch to keep Ryan Church from getting an extra base hit. Also, Brett Gardner made a diving catch on a Lastings Milliedge drive.

As a little sidenote, everyone in the stadium got a mini bobblehead of C.C. Sabathia. I thought it was worth mentioning. Something that may spark your interest.

Hi everyone! I'm writing another blog tonight! I want to inform you of things that happened yesterday (March 2nd) because TODAY IS OFFICIALLY THE FIRST GAME OF EXHIBITION GAMES! I am going to report on three things -- Joba Chamberlain's health, Yanks getting ready to battle against the Pirates tomorrow, and another field trip the day before the first Spring Training game. Joe Girardi is such a cool manager. I'm so jealous!

Joba Chamberlain, physically, is a little down. He is currently suffering from flu-like symptoms. His bullpen session for Tuesday was cancelled because he was feeling so under the weather. He is scheduled to pitch another bullpen sometime soon. Hopefully this'll heat up the competition a little more -- with Joba being sick, Philly may want to to take advantage of this! I wouldn't be surprised. After all, his nickname IS "Phil-thy", isn't it? (:

The Yankees are playing their first game today (March 3rd) against the Pirates! Of course, the Yanks have been working very hard, training every day, working out, and getting back into the rhythm. With a new team, the Yankees are looking to take the 2010 by storm, winning the world series again! However, Jorge Posada thinks that it is going to be harder to win with a new team. With a new team, he thinks, we need to figure out how everyone works. We want to see how everyone takes a pitch, their hitting zone, how they field, etc. You never know what you have until you really look at it and attempt to understand. The Yanks are going to have to do a LOT of understanding this Spring Training. We have a new team, and we have more new players than last year! We especially need to look out for the young ones (Jesus Montero, Andrew Brackman, etc.) to see what they have in store for us. This will be the Yankee debut for some guys, others, it'll be the norm. However, Girardi did tell us that we will see a familiar face -- Ross Ohlendorf, a former Yankee reliever.

The last point I want to talk about tonight is the male bonding that the guys had today -- they went to an arcade after practice! I am so jealous...I LOVE ARCADES! WHY DIDN'T JOE INVITE ME?! BACK TO THE BLOGGING...The guys had a ton of fun on Tuesday. The three games were video Indy Car Racing, Skee Ball and Pop-A-Shot. AJ Burnett and Dana Cavalea owned at Indy Car Racing, Royce Ring and Mark Melancon dominated at Pop-A-Shot, and Andrew Brackman and Eduardo Nunez took a bow as the first and second place winners at Skee Ball. Mark Teixeira laughed and said that Royce Ring was hands down the best at Pop-A-Shot. The rookies enjoyed it because they got a chance to bond with the guys that they are learning from on the field. For example, Francisco Cervelli got to bond with Jorge Posada, the guy he's learning from as a second catcher. He said that he benefitted from last year's trip to the pool hall, and because of that little trip, he gained more confidence in himself. One person that truly enjoyed this trip was Curtis Granderson. He has never had anything like this before, so this was a great experience for him. He really enjoyed himself. Mark Teixeira said it the best -- "We all felt like kids again."

Hi everyone, I don't want to 100% forget about you guys. There are a few things happening in Yankee baseball that were to significant to not mention. I'm going to copy and paste the links and then sum them up tomorrow when I have the chance. Black Eyed Peas were amazing! Go see their concert -- that was possibly the best concert I've ever been to! There are four things I'm going to report on for tonight: The general topic of Spring Training, A-Rod's doctor gets pinched, Burnett seriously considering adding the changeup to his pitches, and Mariano Rivera's bullpen session!

The first topic to discuss is the upcoming Grapefruit league games (aka Exhibition games). This is going to be a good Spring Training because we have so many things to look forward to! The first reason to point out is the battle between pitchers for the starting rotation. You have the best of the best competing for a spot to be able to pitch with the greatest starters of all time. From the blogs I've written for the past few weeks, you can see how the competition is heating up! The second object of interest to people is the fact that the Yankees are playing their 2009 World Series rivals, the Philadelphia Phillies! The Phillies will try to beat them in order to show them that they're back for another year and they're more than prepared to battle out for another World Series. However, they're also going to flaunt the new jewelry they bought this off season -- and I don't mean a World Series ring. This piece of jewelry can't compare to a World Series ring! Its name is Roy Halladay and he signed a contract with the Phillies worth $60 million! Comments are tearing through the microphones and recorders of reporters standing along the field, spreading the word that the Phillies are back for more! As Jimmy Rollins said, "once you win something, you have a bull's-eye on your back!" I can't wait to see the competition heat up between the Phillies and the Yankees. Let's keep the pitching filthy, shall we? Let's be friends by the time the game is over and not break anyone's wrist or "accidentally slide" into someone's chest...Let's not have a repeat of 2008 Spring Training? Thanks (: I'm looking forward to this Spring Training game!

The second topic to discuss is that pesky A-Rod. He never seems to be out of the headlines, does he? A-Rod's doctor, Dr. Anthony Galea, is suspected of not just limiting himself to be a sport's doctor. Rodriguez, along with Mets' shortstop, Jose Reyes, and other non-baseball patients of Galea's are being questioned about him. Rodriguez refused to comment to the media about his relationship with Galea (for more details, check out the article below that corresponds to this part of the blog). Someone mentioned to the FBI that shortly after A-Rod's hip surgery, he went down to New York to treat Rodriguez. However, the Yankees never authorized Galea to treat A-Rod. A little suspicious, don't you think? Although I respect Rodriguez's decision not to comment (which is probably the best thing to do, because it seems to me now that he is always being taken out of context). Hopefully this will be a calm year (headline wise) for A-Rod. God only knows that the only thing the Yankee Organization needs is another year of drama from him.

Another topic of discussion is AJ Burnett and that new pitch he's deciding on adding to the pitches he's already got. I guess that's a good thing, right? Watching CC Sabathia last year, he decided to work on it. He went home right after the parade and started working on it. Girardi and Eiland are always in favor of adding in different pitches. When Burnett said that he was REALLY serious about adding the changeup, he was ecstatic. So far, so good. Burnett is doing very well. We'll most likely see his changeup when he pitches on Saturday. I can't wait for that!

The last topic I want to discuss tonight is Mariano Rivera. His bullpen session today? Yeah, well it went so well, it was almost non existent! Since his surgery, he's getting a lot better. I can't really spend a lot of time on him because we already spoke about him a few weeks ago. I just wanted to throw in this tonight that he was doing well. We all want to know how Mo is doing, don't we?

Good evening, Yankee fans! There are two days until the Grapefruit league starts! My cousin's husband and I just had a conversation about how long we have until the games begin. If you're wondering, all of the games are going to take place on MLB Network and of course, the YES Network. Most of the games will be shown on MLB TV & not YES, but you'll have to check the labeled website below for more information. There are three things I'm reporting on tonight -- Chan Ho Park, CC Sabathia, and the competition between Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain!

Chan Ho Park officially sealed the deal with the New York Yankees this weekend and signed a contract for $1,2 Million. The Steinbrenner family informed Park that in order to be on the Yankees, he had to be clean shaven and he had to get a haircut. Park, as of right now, is going to work out of the bullpen. In the contract that he signed, it said that Park would be working from the bullpen. Two people that were questioned about Park today were Brian Cashman (yours truly) and Alex Rodriguez. A-Rod commented that Park was a dangerous weapon for the Phillies in 2009. He's happy to have him on our side. Brian Cashman said that he's happy that Park is with us. He also commented on the way that Park pitches. He throws harder when he's coming out of the bullpen. Although he did not stay with the Phillies (which was also an option for him), he was happy with the time that he had there. He admitted that the Phillies helped him, and he helped the younger pitchers on the team. CC Sabathia is beginning to pitch to the batters during batting practice. Sabathia admits that he feels fine, and he's ready for the 2010 season. Sabathia (along with Pettitte and Burnett) would have to pitch three bullpen sessions and one batting practice before pitching in a Spring Training game. The pitching staff, along with Joe Girardi, thinks that it's the best option for the three veterans. Although Sunday's bullpen session was cancelled due to inclement weather, he was still lights out for batting practice!

Hughes and Chamberlain's battle for the fifth spot in the rotation continued today. They also threw a batting practice session. Phil and A-Rod were having some laughs today. Hughes said that whenever A-Rod hit it deep, he tried not to look. A-Rod thinks that the competition between Hughes and Chamberlain is going to really benefit the Yankees for the 2010 season.
