Midfielder for the Columbus Crew, Kirk Urso, died early Sunday morning in a Ohio hospital. According to the county coroner, no cause of death is known at this time.
Urso, 22, was pronounced dead at 1:50 AM at Columbus' Grant Medical Center. An autopsy is scheduled on Monday.
An hour before his death, Columbus police was called to a bar where Urso was taken to the hospital where he later died. Columbus police have not commented on the situation.
At the time of his death, Urso was nursing a groin injury and was not with the team for its game against the DC United and has only played six games with the Crew, his only season with the team, due to the injury.
The Columbus Crew released a statement that read: "The thoughts and prayers of the entire Columbus Crew and Hunt Sports Group are with the Urso family in this time of need."
The league will hold a moment of silence for Urso at all games on Sunday.
Last year, Urso helped the North Carolina Tar Heels win the NCAA title and was a member of the 2007 US under-17 World Cup squad.
