People are always panning the Super Bowl halftime show and it does deserve it most of the time (Yeah, nothing says the NFL like Madonna!), but it pales in comparison to the nugget I found on glorious YouTube.
Present day halftime acts are well known musicians and can create quite a hype, but back in 1989 the planners gave the show to a magician. No, not David Copperfield. Not even Siegfried and Roy.
Yes, it was Elvis Presto.
Elvis Presto was an Elvis impersonator, always good, and a magician, even better. He was supposed to perform the "World's Largest Card Trick" for the halftime show. Needless to say it goes swimmingly.
The crowd was, needless to say, unenthusiastic. Me thinks it was a fix for the King of Hearts.
NBC had Bob Costas do the introduction for the show. He looked like he would have rather called a midseason WNBA game.
Costas at his finest at 1:14
Some say the Bengals lost Super Bowl XXIII because Boomer Esaison was too embarrassed for Elvis Presto and that this one single halftime show ruined the once promising career of Ickey Woods.
