The Sports Lounge:
David Haye is ready to conquer America. The new WBA heavyweight champion has all the attributes to become box office stateside in a weight division that has lacked star quality and charisma in recent years.
The blue-ribbon weight class has also been lacking class, with the Klitschko brothers a league apart from the other big men. Nikolai Valuev has struggled to prove he has much beyond his massive size, whilst John Ruiz lives up to his moniker of ‘the quiet man’ in more ways than one.
America has not taken to the undemonstrative Ukrainian brothers, so the charismatic and charming Haye is sure to grab attention. He can box, too; his dismantling of Valuev in Nuremberg was as technically and tactically astute performance as the weight division has seen for some time which can only help his boxing odds in the long run.
Haye must first recover from a hand injury and dispose of Ruiz in a mandatory title defence, but one of the Klitschkos surely waits in a massive unification bout. Germany, where the brothers are hugely popular, is a possible location, but Golden Boy representatives know a Haye-Klitschko showdown could be a major Las Vegas event.
It would be highly marketable, partly because Haye has already mastered the art of pre-fight trash talk - his wearing of a tastelessly provocative t-shirt ahead of his aborted clash with Wladimir earlier this year has already added an edge to a prospective meeting.
More importantly a clash with Wladimir or Vitali would be winnable for Haye. Both fights would be competitive and if Haye was to win, he would certainly become a major boxing name in the States – if he is not already.
