Rope A Dope Radio:
With answers required by Golden Boy Promotions recently over the win of Peterson over Khan, things are getting more and more suspicious and looming to become an even greater embarrassment to boxing. The year 2011 is ending with so much drama about the scorecards. Richard Schaefer said in the conference call a few days ago that he wanted to look at the facts as they have been obscured he said, "So let's look at these facts. Let's look where we stand. There was clearly controversy after the fight on this scoring. I've hardly ever seen before, the long period of time it took for tabulating these scorecards and announcing the decision. That was very strange in itself." He went on to say "Then you look at the official card, which showed initially a 10/10 on the scorecard of George Hill for round seven. It was later crossed out and changed to an 8/10 in favour of Peterson. Then you look at the WBA supervisor, Michael Walsh, who is a certified public accountant and CPA by profession, and probably the man with the most experience that night sitting ringside there."
He also pointed out the whole procedure in great details and said, "Certainly from an accounting point of view, but as well as from a fight official point of view, he was involved in many other championship fights before. He kept, as it is customary, a WBA master score sheet which he used to input the same information that the District of Columbia Boxing Commission used for their scorecard. It's basically the individual per rounds score sheets, which are collected from the referee and then supposed to be given to the commission."
Schaefer clearly points out that the fight between Khan and Peterson was a draw and said, "So the Commission keeps the master score sheet, so does the WBA, and so does the IBF. Therefore the results would be the same, right? They all use the same information. Well shockingly they were not. They were different. It was the same for the scorecard of Nelson Vasquez, who had it for Khan, and it was the same for Valerie Dorsett, who had it for Peterson, but somehow George Hill's card had it a draw. Therefore the WBA showed on their card that the fight was a draw."
I interviewed Amir Khan after the conference and here are his thoughts about the fight as well as the future of the investigation.
SC - With the current situation under way with regard to the IBF investigating the suspicious circumstances of the scorecards, please would you kindly tell us of the hopeful points the IBF have declared to you ? We understand that the investigation is not yet complete. Please inform us about what you aim to achieve. AK - I've just left it in the hands of my team and Golden Boy Promotions. We were not happy with the refereeing in the fight and the problems with scoring. In the end, it has nothing to do with Lamont, who fought a great fight on the night. An appeal has been launched and we'll hear back around the middle of January.
SC - You have the total support of your fans and the world press is behind you right now. Do you think that this loss to Peterson has caused any detriment in your career, as your progression has been very fast track in these last couple of years? AK- I don't think so, in fact I think you could say my star has risen in the boxing world because these are the types of fights people love. Of course losing the belts the way I did and in the circumstances I did leaves a bad taste in the mouth but the fight itself was the type all boxing fans love to see.
SC - Amir, you told me that you will be able to adjust to the Washington DC weather just before the fight and the travelling you will do to Washington DC would be fine, and the adjustment would be ok. However, you said recently that you did suffer a slight cold. Do you think that perhaps you will stick to not travelling a lot in your next fight, as it may of affected you on this occasion against Peterson in your performance? AK - No, I was fine for the fight. I had a little cold which I caught in LA, but I was ready for the fight.
SC - Team Khan and Golden Boy Promotions have been remarkable at looking after you as a person and from a business standpoint, however, do you feel or think things could of went differently ? AK - No my team did a great job, and I have 100% trust in them.
SC - Fans and people in the boxing scene have been asking whether you will fight Peterson again for the re-match in the UK, and if this does not materialize for you in your next fight would you be prepared to fight Bredis Prescott again? AK - I want the re-match with Peterson. That is what we are aiming for. I'm not interested in any other fight at this time I want to prove that I was the rightful winner of the first fight, and that I'm still the best in the 140lb division.
SC - Lastly what are your thoughts about what you'd like to achieve in the next 12 months, because as we know, you have been thinking about potententially the biggest showdown in your career against Floyd Mayweather? AK - As I said, all I want at the moment is a re-match with Peterson to prove categorically that I'm the best 140lb fighter in the world. We put on a great show the first time. So I'm sure the next time it will be just as exciting. I need to take one fight at a time and can't afford to look too far ahead.
SC - Thank you very much have a good holiday.
AK - Thanks Samaarah.
