Claressa Shields of the United States defeated Russia's Nadezda Torlopova on Thursday night, 19-12, to win the gold medal in women's Olympic middleweight boxing.
The London 2012 Games are the first time women's boxing would be included as a sport.
The 17-year-old is the second-youngest fighter to win gold in either men's or women's boxing. Shields was the only American fighter to reach the gold-medal match in London. Her teammate Marlen Esparza won the bronze medal Thursday in the women's flyweight competition.
