Evander Holyfield, at age 46, is set to take on 7-foot giant Nikolai Valuev for one of the world title belts in the heavyweifght division. If Holyfield pulls the upset, he'll be a heavyweight champion for the 5th time, just not THE heavyweight champion.
Holyfield's quest for 5 has led him to fight on and on, giving him a slight edge on the Energizer Bunny for persistence. Still, Valuev won't care so much about Holy's persistence, he'll be trying to bash his face in. While Valuev isn't great, and it's clear a prime Holyfield would win for sure, he is a very good fighter. Is Holyfield anymore?
Admittedly, Evander Holyfield is my favorite all time fighter and a living legend. But really, can he compete at this level any longer? His last title fight, a snoozer with Sultan Ibragimov, ended with a younger, quicker fighter beating the old man to the punch. Will this fight be any different?
Maybe.
Holyfield has always done his best against big fighters that are easy to hit. Valuez isn't slippery, he's just big. He can be hit. But can Holyfield hurt him? Holy's strong but he was never a one punch fighter. He was always the kind of fighter that just outworked you and KO'd you with combinations. I haven't seen Evander Holyfield throw a real combination in years.
But, I'll be watching on Dec. 20th. Evander Holyfield will go for a title one more time and something tells me, no matter what it may really mean in the grand scheme of things, that he just might pull it off.
