It's time for the feature that always kicks in when I have multiple boxing-related topics on my mind but don't want to devote an entire post to any of them. Yes sir, it's time for....

SHOE SHINING

* How about that Adrien Broner, eh? He can fight, he raps his own ring walk and he apparently has something in his hair that needs to be addressed right after he fights. Just 22, he's got everything needed for mainstream stardom of the kind desperately needed by an American boxer. Any American boxer. Well, except maybe for compelling opponents at 130 pounds. Contrast his situation with that of Devon Alexander. Like Broner, he's talented and young enough to keep getting better. The problem (pun intended) is that Alexander doesn't have the self-promotional flair that Broner is already showing. Like it or not, that's an important part of the modern boxing scene, something that everyone should have learned when Floyd Mayweather went from smiley but boring boxer to brilliantly antagonistic superstar. Obviously, following Floyd's blueprint isn't for everyone (maybe not for anyone else, really), but you've got to do something to stand out besides just show up and beat people. I'm not going to make any kind of prediction about the in-ring success that Broner and Alexander may have from here on out, but I'd wager a large portion of my imaginary savings account that Broner becomes a crossover-type star before Alexander...

* Manny Pacquiao could be switching his marketing allegiance from Nike to Jordan Brand. Yes, there's a difference, and yes, it would be a big deal if he makes the move. Nike moves a lot of different kinds of merchandise through the power of Pac-Man, so much so that the special sneakers they whip up for him from time to time are probably the least important part of his line. Outside of the iconic Air Jordan series of shoes, Jordan Brand's global reach doesn't feel quite as strong as Nike's, and Pacquiao would be a big boost in that area. It will be interesting to see if Nike sweetens its deal with Manny to keep him in its camp...

* I'm always amazed when I read that UFC fighters or pro wrestlers are vegans, and now Timothy Bradley is too. Well, kind of, because he doesn't do it all the time. But he told Bernardo Osuna on this past week's edition of FNF that he'd soon be cutting out meat again as he prepares to take on Pacquiao in June. More power to you Tim. I don't know if I could give up all meat. It's just too delicious...

* The Alexander Povetkin-Marco Huck fight on Saturday afternoon was actually not that bad. Do I need to see them fight again, though? No, I think I'm good...

* I've long maintained that Mayweather could have a future in the WWE once his boxing days were over (he's a natural at playing the heel, after all) except that he's too small. His appearance at WrestleMania XXIV was certainly a success, something that was brought up last night on WWE Raw when Cody Rhodes reminded the Big Show about his loss to the much, much smaller Floyd as a way to embarrass him. A scripted embarrasment can still sting folks! As an added bonus, Rhodes gave a free plug for Mayweather's May 5 meeting with Miguel Cotto...

* Speaking of Mayweather-Cotto, tickets for that card go on sale today at 1 pm Eastern. They can be had at Ticketmaster or the MGM Grand website, and they range from $200 to $1500. Seats for Pacquiao-Bradley have been on sale for four days now, and the cheapest tickets ($200) are already sold out.
