Later today, it is likely that the Duke Blue Devils will emerge as the #1 team in the nation, again. There is a chance that Indiana retains the spot after defeating #10 OSU on the road, impressively. But their last second loss to Illinois will probably knock them from the spot. Duke is the only Top 5 team that did not lose, so it seems natural that the media would stick them as the top team in the land. Is Duke deserving of it? Just as much as anyone else that is in the top 10. There is no dominant team in college basketball, the margin of difference based upon Ken Pomeroy’s ratings is really slim. The Florida Gators, who had an aberration of a loss at Arkansas last week, is at the top of his rankings with Indiana, Louisville, Michigan, and Pittsburgh following them. Duke is 6th. Pomeroy’s ratings are predictive based upon performance, as opposed to being an subjective ranking, like the media and coaching rankings. It is much more accurate, and it eliminates opinion from the equation. Can it be wrong? Of course, but that’s an outlier to ratings. We call this; Wisconsin. Don’t get too upset [...]
