By Chad Lykins – In what was arguably one of the most anticipated decisions from the class of 2012, Duke fans breathed a gigantic sigh of relief when Amile Jefferson gave his pledge to head coach Mike Krzyzewski and the Blue Devils in May. After prolonging his forthcoming decision for months, Jefferson finally came to his wits by joining Duke’s incoming freshmen class, including Rasheed Sulaimon – and redshirt freshmen Alex Murphy and Marshall Plumlee. With the decision, the 6’8” power forward out of Friends’ Central School brings all of the qualities in a player that Duke needed for the 2012-13 season. Size, length and athleticism. The No. 25 ranked prospect in the 2012 ESPN 100, he is a guy that will come off the bench for the Blue Devils in his first year and provide a spark on both ends of the court. Where Duke needs him the most, however, is on defense. And defensively is where Jefferson shines. After the 2011-12 season it was no secret that Duke struggled mightily on the defe...

Four fervent freshmen for Duke

By DukeHokie – It’s almost expected anymore at an elite basketball institution to have an incoming freshman who is on a short list of front runners for conference player of the year; occasionally even national POY.  This season, Duke doesn’t have that.  What Duke has this season are four newcomers (yes Marshall and Alex are newcomers) who have a chance to add something that...

A new Trio forms at Duke

DukeHokie split up the team into three separate classes – Freshmen/Redshirt freshmen, Sophomores/Juniors and Seniors and profiled each group before the season tips tonight. Here’s his look at the Sophomores/Juniors. By DukeHokie - When I was asked to write articles defining each class as a whole and not a sum of its parts, breaking down two of the classes was very easy...

2013 Duke Basketball player spotlight — Marshall Plumlee

By Chad Lykins – After voluntarily taking a redshirt for his freshman season, Marshall Plumlee enters the 2012-13 season as a much improved player than when he entered the Duke campus. After gaining valuable experience at the collegiate level practicing with his teammates on a consistent basis, he placed himself in line as the key center reserve. However, the wait to see that development...

Seth Curry Injury Could Limit Duke

There has been some speculation on message boards that Seth Curry’s mysterious leg injury is a stress fracture, but there has been nothing that I can find that can confirm that. However, from everything Mike Krzyzewski has said about Curry’s injury it  is significant enough of a problem where the senior guard may miss parts of or at least be limited the entire season. Curry...

Georgia St.-Duke Preview

Mike Krzyzewski wants his latest Duke team to resemble some of its predecessors. He wants the eighth-ranked Blue Devils to play aggressive defense. He wants toughness, togetherness and passion at that end of the floor. Some of that was missing last year when their opponents had the ball - and among other things, that inability to consistently stop people helped lead to one of the...

2013 Duke Basketball player spotlight — Josh Hairston

When Josh Hairston arrived on Duke’s campus in the summer of 2010, he was 6’7″ tall and weighed 210 pounds. Not ready physically to play the power forward position and not skilled enough offensively to usurp Kyle Singler at the small forward spot, Hairston played only 165 minutes the entire season. The highlight of his freshman season was by the St. Louis game, where Hairston...

Memphis blues: Austin Nichols picks Tigers over Duke

By DukeHokie – Remember, remember the 5th of November.  That’s the day ESPN’s 12th ranked player,  Austin Nichols, spurned the advances of a legendary coach and national power and the in-state school with all of the pretty girls, to stay at home and play with his AAU boys.  For schools at the level of Tennessee and Auburn, this is just another miss in an otherwise slightly...

DURHAM, N.C. – (Duke Sports Information) Duke quarterback Sean Renfree, offensive linemen Dave Harding and Perry Simmons, and cornerback Ross Cockrell were named to the Academic All-District III Team, as announced on Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Duke was one of only four FBS schools in the nation with at least four players on the Academic...

Duke Bye Week Anything But Uneventful

It may have been the Duke Football team’s bye week and the player may have the next two days off but it has been far from just a down week for the Blue Devils. Several news items came out of the week, perhaps most notably were some rewards and recognition that was handed out to several of the players. Freshman place kicker Ross Martin was honored with being named as one of 20...
