Is Indiana Really a Step Up from Marquette?

ESPN's Andy Katz is reporting that Indiana will announce Marquette's Tom Crean as its new coach tomorrow. My first reaction on reading that: Really? That's a step up?

The tradition at Bloomington is starting to get tainted a bit. Hopefully the Crean hire will add some bright spots to this program.

Who wants that job now? Aren't they losing scholarships?

I think they're losing 1 scholarship for next year.

If he is successful then it is a huge step up. Bringing IU back to glory is more prestigious than anything similar that he can do at Marquette.

I suppose this is true.

Indiana's the better job, assuming you can stomach watching Big 10 basketball. The heritage there isn't matched by very many programs.

uh, this can't be a serious question....

Indiana has the most storied program in the Big Ten....Marquette struggles to get noticed in the Big East

This is very similar to Rich Rodriguez leaving West Virginia for Michigan. Both coaches were productive in smaller markets but when one of the most storied programs in the sport calls you I don't think you can turn it down. The only difference is that Crean will most likely be leaving on better terms.

Step up... When he recruits he will have to tell the kids what is going on which is practically nothing.. They lose 1 scholarship but still have 12... Once he says they wont miss a beat then they will start rolling in for a new start... If I was recruiting I would probably tell the recruits about how I wanted to get the prestige of the program back on top. Probably just start by getting one or two really good players then everything else will fall into place and they will be back towards the top... Crean is a good coach...

Lots of coaches would love to have that Indiana job. If dumbass Sampson would have kept his nose clean, they would have had a winning program. Getting a good coach like Crean will help elevate the program back where it should be. One scholarship loss is not that bad to lost, but how do we know there won't be more. Is the Sampson thing over yet as far as the NCAA is concerned?

Right now, I'd go with Marquette
Any other time, I'd go with Indiana, duh

Indiana was actually playing quite well until all of this crap started with Sampson. Will be interesting to see if Crean can bring them back to respectability. I would bet that he will.
