The Cubs spent $300 million dollars in the acquisition of talent in the off-season and right now, it's looking like a train wreck. In light of Sweet Lou Piniella blowing up and Alfonso Soriano forgetting how to swat homers, it's become a powder keg in Cubbie-world. • I was at this game and the Cubs played a sloppy game from the get-go. It seemed as if each poor play Carlos put less and less effort into his pitching. If I were Lou, I would have taken him out a little sooner than he did.
To me the Cubs and Carlos's poor play has me asking these questions:
The Cubs defense seemed to play as if like they were afraid of making an error, is this Carlos' influence or is it because of the prior losing streak?
The poor play by Michael Barrett was rightly called an error but on the TV replay the announcers indicated Michael might have been crossed up (he was leaning toward the outside of the plate and the sinker broke inside). We all know Carlos's sinker breaks down and into a right hand hitter, was the pitch called a slider or should it have been an outside sinker instead of an inside sinker?
My last question is, I believe because of Carlos' temper, Lou is leaving him in too long at times. When Carlos gets upset, most o the time, you might as well take him out.
As far as the Cubs signing Carlos for a long term contract, be very cautious and write into the contract huge penalties for the kind of behavior Carlos exhibited against Michael. This kind of behavior is not acceptable, if he were working most places he would be fired on the spot.
