NCAA Tournament Preview: Cinderellas

With the 2008 NCAA Tournament Bracket announced last night, every sports fan is trying to figure out who will be this year`s Cinderella squad? The biggest Cinderella of all was George Mason in 2006 when they went to the Final Four, so we ask the question: Who will be this year`s George Mason? Here are a list of possibilities:

1) #13 Siena (22-10) - The Saints are the champions of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and take on #4 seed Vanderbilt of the SEC in the 1st round as part of the Midwest Region. The Saints are a dangerous team because of their suffocating pressure defense and their ability to shoot from the outside. Senior Tay Fiser, juniors Kenny Hasbrouck and Josh Duell and sophomore Edwin Ubiles all can shoot the 3-pointer well and forward Alex Franklin can dominate in the paint. For a young Mid-Major team, they play with a lot of poise and will not be scared of Vandy come Friday. Look for a potential upset here.

2) #12 Temple (21-12) - The champions of the Atlantic 10 Conference finished the season strong winning 7 straight games. They take on the #5 seed in the South, the Michigan State Spartans, in the 1st round. The Owls have a balanced attack with lethal guard Dionte Christmas, guard/forward Mark Tyndale and point guard Chris Clark. The Owls have 7-foot center Sergio Olmos to clog up the middle. The Spartans of Michigan State need to come well-prepared to this one or they will be another victim of the annual 5-12 upset.

3) #10 Davidson (26-6) - The Davidson Wildcats ran through the Southern Conference going 20-0 in conference play in the regular season. And although the Wildcats did not have any big non-conference wins, they played North Carolina, Duke and UCLA all very tough. Davidson plays #7 seed Gonzaga in the 1st round, with the Zags being another potential Cinderella. But I have to like the Davidson Wildcats and sharp-shooting Stephen Curry, who averages 25 points per game this year.

4) #5 Drake (28-4) - The Drake Bulldogs of the Missouri Valley Conference had a terrific season. They were awarded with a #5 seed in the West region and take on a tough Mid-Major team in Western Kentucky. So why would Drake be considered a Cinderella if they are a #5 seed? Probably because no one is picking them to get past the Sweet 16. But these guys are for real and I would not be surprised at all if they made a Final Four run like George Mason in 2006. Led by point guard Adam Emmenecker, who has been deemed as the Mid-Major`s version of Steve Nash. Josh Young leads the team in scoring and Klayton Korver (Kyle`s little brother) is deadly from 3-point range.

OTHER POTENTIAL CINDERELLAS:

#10 Saint Mary`s (25-6)

#10 South Alabama (26-6)

#12 George Mason (23-10)

#12 Western Kentucky (27-6)

#13 San Diego (21-13)

I think that Siena has a good shot at making it past the first round. They finished the season on a hot streak and teams that get hot this time of year can do some damage in the tourney. Although, they do have to play Vanderbilt in the first round and Vanderbilt is no pushover and could make some noise in the tournament themselves like last year. Butler could do some damage also along with Winthrop.

What about St. Joseph??? this is one of the only upsets I have in the first round... I have kentucky over Marquette. but kdont know how much of an upset that is.... And how are you going to say Drake then go and say Western Kentucky is also a cinderella?? if you do that then you have to say any seed 10 and up could be a potential cinderella...

St. Joe's could make some noise, too. They play my Sooners in the first round. That should be a good game.

Yea I picked St. Joe's, I almost picked them to beat LU. I dont think LU is as good as everybody says. I dont think they stand a chance against UT! I dont even like UT. My team's in the final four are sort of suprising but have what it takes to beat the one seeds in there bracket. I got UNC, Wisconsin, Memphis(had stanford but changed it), and UCONN!!! How bout them apples.... lol

St. Joe's, Temple and Villanova -- it will be the year of the Philly underdog.

if you watch louiville play believe me they are THAT good. in reality they should have been a two see but because they were missing david padgett at the beginning of the year they lost some games (like BYU) that they would win with the team they have now.

they are the deepest team in the country and can run a lot because of that. their press defense is amazing. david padgett being healthy was huge because he is a big part of their halfcourt offense, without him they relied on their press d to score a lot of points.

tennessee is good but louisville will be able to force them into a lot of bad shots which is the biggest part of tenessee's game.

i like your wisconsin pick in the final four but they have a pretty tough road to get there.

TX has a strong team. Kansas is deep and can play any kind of pace. Memphis had a weak schedule, so I am still not sold on them. They only played one strong team down the stretch and they got beat at TN, plus they are not a good free-throw shooting team. Carolina has to be the favortie right now. I also like UCLA. Any one of the teams listed above in the article could be a spoiler and make the Sweet Sixteen.

Everybody is forgetting the team that WILL be the cinderella team in this years tournament, and that team is ORAL ROBERTS. They play Pitt in the first round and I think Pitt will be drained from that run in the Big East Tournament, and Oral Roberts has proven they can win against the "best" teams. They have beaten Kansas and lost to Texas only by 8. ORU comes to play every game, they have an inside presense and a good shot blocker, and also have great outside guard play with Robert Jarvis. So you will all see that ORU will beat Pitt and then upset Michigan St.

Pitt blows them out.

nah man, ORU got Robert Jarvis, nuff said

Oh now i see why you like ORU!!! haha... j/k... but pitt will beat them..

but seriously, ORU is good and you will see why tomorrow

TEMPLE! TEMPLE! TEMPLE!!! WOOOOO THE OWLSSS BABYYY...clearly a temple student and big supporter if you couldnt tell...GOIN DOWNNN MICH STTT...T for TEMPLE U!!!!

st joes is by far the safest upset pick to go with, they can matchup to vitually any team in the country. temple only won the a-10 because deonte christmas was hitting ridiculous shots. st joes has a solid defense led by ahmad nivins and a triple threat with pat calathes. rob ferguson can also drain threes consistently. they are a very balanced team and are playing a team that they are probably better than even though they are 5 seeds apart.
kent state is another good upset team not mentioned, although even if they win in the first round they would play kansas, who btw has had a history of losing early when predicted to go far.

OU takes St. Joe.

Hell yeah! Temple i hope they go as far as they can!! BUT GEORGETOWN FOR THE BIGGY BABY!!! SIXERS NEED TO SCORE ANOTHER AMAZING SG AND WE CAN MAKE IT TO THE FINALS AGAIN!!!

saint marys will own/samhan and simpson are unstopppable. god is a gael!

saint marys will own/samhan and simpson are unstopppable. god is a gael!

I got kent state winning but dont count that an upset. 9 over 8 isnt much of an upset to me... Just like 10 over 7, because 10 and 9 seeds win 50% + of those games... And another safe upset is Kentucky over Marquette. IMO....

COPPIN STATE AND AMERICAN, Y'ALL.

I know they aren't going to win, but it would be cool if they did.

Check out our latest posted article discussing Thursday's potential upsets of ORAL ROBERTS and GEORGE MASON. And we agree that ST. JOE'S should defeat Oklahoma. The Sooners have a tough inside game, but the Hawks are so athletic and versatle that Oklahoma may not be able to keep up with them. Enjoy the NCAA Tournament!

I got Western Kentucky over Drake too.... Watch out for em!!!!!

One thing to take into account is the distance fans are going to have to travel. If your looking for a good upset in the first round, take a look at ...

Davidson University(10) fans have to travel only 121 miles to round 1 + 2 (Raleigh).

If you're looking for somebody to make it all the way to the final four, The University of Texas Arlington(16) fans only have to travel an average of 263 miles to each venue. Second only to The University of Texas(2).

I got these numbers from a cool tool at http://www.produnkhoops.com/sandbox/geo_tourn/index.php
