Coach: Roy Williams (7th year) Last season's record: 34-4
Spotlight player
There are lots of talented players at North Carolina, but not many who've been consistently productive. One who has is senior Marcus Ginyard—but the catch is that he was productive filling an entirely different role and position than he will this season. Ginyard was a small forward/defensive specialist two seasons ago, before sitting out nearly all of 2008-09 with a foot injury. Back then, he averaged 6.9 points in 28 minutes per game, and it doesn't seem as though this team will function properly if Ginyard delivers a similar output this year. "There's no question this should be seen as a great opportunity for me to go out and showcase some of the things I've been working on for the past couple years—and have the opportunity for that offense to open up," he said.
Reason to hope
The odd reality of North Carolina's season is that this group might have more pure NBA-type talent than the one that just won the N...

UNC Point Guard Larry Drew II Is Ready To Show What He Can Do
Larry Drew II knows something that you don’t know.
He must.
What an enigma. This backup point guard turned starter, who many experts, fans and haters concede to be one of, if not the weakest link on North Carolina’s basketball team, walking into the Dean Dome’s media room as self assured as, say, his predecessor [...]
M. Basketball. Tar Heels Down Belmont Abbey 107-59 In Exhibition
Single-Game Tickets On Sale NowFollow Carolina Basketball On TwitterDeon Thompson had 23 points and eight rebounds to help No. 6 North Carolina beat Belmont Abbey 107-59 on Friday night in its only exhibition game. Tyler Zeller scored 17 points for the defending national champions, while Ed Davis added 13 points, six rebounds and four blocks. The Tar Heels shot 57 percent and took...
Barnes or bust for UNC?
North Carolina is now solely focused on recruiting Harrison Barnes. They only lose two seniors of note next year - Marcus Ginyard and Deon Thompson, and Ed Davis is a lock for entering the draft. The frontcourt has enough depth to absorb these losses. Plus, North Carolina has a commitment from 2011 elite post player James McAdoo. If the Tar Heels fail to land Barnes, Roy Williams...
Heels need Lawson-esque performance from Larry Drew
The first coming of Larry Drew II hardly stirred any Roman Colosseum dust. He was a bit player on the largest stage, a point-guard understudy to the maddeningly unique Ty Lawson. If Lawson seemed larger than life -- right down to a sore big toe further inflated by his father's old-time remedy of warm salt water -- Drew seemed smaller than the fine print on North Carolina's NCAA trophy. No more.
Reloaded Heels hold edge on blue blood brothers
The ACC media poll named North Carolina and Duke co-favorites to win the league. But we don't do co-favorites around here. Just a single favorite. And the Tar Heels are the favorite, as well they should be, although I'm concerned about the point guard situation. Too often, the talk is about how North Carolina will replace Tyler Hansbrough, but that won't be a problem with Ed Davis...
Heels Roll in Exhibition Victory
Preseason prognostications for No. 4 North Carolina have centered around the program’s immense talent and depth in the frontcourt, and the Tar Heels further cemented those beliefs in Friday’s 107-59 exhibition victory over Belmont Abbey behind Deon Thompson’s 23 points and eight rebounds. If you were looking for lean, athletic length on Friday night, the Dean E. Smith Center...
Heels, Thompson topple Belmont Abbey in exhibition
Senior Deon Thompson has recorded only two 20-plus point games in his North Carolina career. Judging by the Tar Heels' 107-59 exhibition victory over Belmont Abbey on Friday night, he's poised to post quite a few more. Thompson, who spent the last two seasons starting in all-everything Tyler Hansbrough's shadow, scored 23 points on 11-for-12 shooting at the Smith Center.
Hansbrough could make debut against Wizards
Tyler Hansbrough is expected to play for the first time tonight, albeit on a limited basis, after missing all of training camp, the preseason and the first four regular-season games rehabbing a stress reaction in his right shin that dates back to his senior season at North Carolina.
