Stanford Upsets #2 UCLA

Lawrence Hill scored the last seven points of the game for Stanford and the Cardinal came away with a 75-68 win over the Bruins. This was UCLA's second loss of the season, and will surely damage their overall ranking. HIll ended up scoring 22 points for the Cardinal.

After UCLA led at halftime, Stanford ran away with the game in the second half. This game once again shows how tough the Pac-10 is this year. For all their shittiness in football this year, at least the Pac-10 is making up for it in basketball.

I hope this article makes it to the top of the pile. What a fantastic game. As you say, UCLA led at half. But it gets better -- Stanford was down by 17 at one point, and Aaron Afflalo had 17 points in the half. They ended the game on a 5-0 run, down by 12. Then in the second half they came out a totally different team. It didn't hurt that UCLA's 3 big me, who had contained the Lopez brothers in the first half, all got into early foul trouble. Stanford stepped up the D (Fred Washington did an especially great job of shutting down Afflalo) and ran the isolation game perfectly... which is when Hill started to shine.

This game is why sports rocks. Stanford is on the road to the tourney, and will crack the top 25 this week. It's fun to speculate where they'll end up. After beating #25 USC on Thursday and #3 UCLA today, I say we just go with the mean. America, meet your new #14 team. (I'll settle for #19).

What was interesting was that Trent Johnson played a small lineup despite UCLA's forwards being in foul trouble. Both Lopez's weren't on the court at the same time during the second half for a long period of time.

I have never seen Maples go nuts like that before.

It's great to finally see that Stanford alums have something to cheer about. The football season didn't really cut it, but this really did. Congrats Pete, on your alma mater.
