Kid is NASTY!

I cringed every time that kid went up for a dunk. He's going to mess his knee Baron Davis style. Plus a mix take of someone dunking says nothing at all. Especially of someone that will be expected to play point guard. Mike Conley Jr. was the best guard out of high school in 2006 based on his handles and leadership on the court. This kid's just a cocky athlete from the looks of it.

On the other hand, he did shoot 100% from behind the arc in that video. But I don't see a very pretty jumper.

Man thumbs - Elliott is a smart kid and a great athlete which is EXACTLY what Duke needs. Word is that he is a "Johnny Dawkins" type player and has been compared to Dawkins by analysts in the past.. Might be why he thought about duke - that and he has a 3.8 gpa and school is a big deal for him. As for your Conley love - I don't think that coach K is big on recruiting kids who only want to stick around for one year and bolt. Other than Greg Monroe there wasn't a single player that K recruited who was in the top 10 rankings. Let USC, UCLA, and OSU run the puppy mills -- that's why you guys go from NCAA championship caliber to losing to DII schools. Duke is legit and here to stay.

It's funny though, Corey Maggettee left Duke after his freshman year because he has the physical characteristics of an NBA superstar, but never really learned how to play the game.

Wrong. "Maggette" left because he would have been NCAA ineligible as a sophomore anyways. He figured the information that he took money from his summer league coach was going to get out. And it did. The dude was a former classmate of mine. Duke Class of 2002. And he plays the game fine for a Clipper. When healthy, he's good for 18 points, 5 boards a night.

Coach K was vocally unhappy with Maggette leaving and I think that his taking money as a HS kid may have played a role. That said he is a solid pro player and I doubt many teams wouldn't like to have him. He gets to the line as much as any player in the league, with the exception of D-wade, and some might argue he does it without getting the superstar/fan favorite calls that we all know occur in the NBA.

The prototypical Duke player that has won championships for the team is Carlos Boozer, Shane Battier, Grant Hill, Christian Laettner, Jason Williams. Not Carmelo Anthony, Vince Carter, Chris Webber, or for that matter Mike Conley. Coach K has a good thing going with his recruiting, regardless of what the duke-hating sports media think, and his philosophy is clear if you pay attention to the players they go after. He picks a few kids in the top 20 and a bunch in the mid-bottom 100 every year. That way they have a solid foundation of mature, well-coached athletes, with the occasional addition of a superstar like Luol Deng.

You can bet, however, that the superstars he recruits will more generally fit the mold of a Kyle Singler than that of an OJ Mayo. It's my opinion that Coach K values a player who wants to learn the game every bit as much, if not more, than a freak athlete.

Then watch something else. Or vote this down and move on. It's not a generic dunk reel when placed in the context of, "this guy is going to Duke next year, and he committed today." There was a timely reason for it.
