Alex Abreu is done at the University of Akron. The three-year point guard whose in-season arrest soured a dream season for the Zips last March was jailed last week for 48 hours on a probation violation. Abreu was already barred from campus after pleading guilty to felony drug trafficking, and it's believed that was the last straw with university judicial affairs. A university spokesman confirmed on Tuesday that Abreu is no longer enrolled at the school. Due to federal student privacy laws, Akron made no further details available. Earlier this month, Akron coach Keith Dambrot told FOXSportsOhio.com he had remained in contact with Abreu, that Abreu was taking steps towards "bettering himself" and, to Dambrot's knowledge, had kept up with his academic coursework to the point that he could potentially play another year of college basketball somewhere. Dambrot was hesitant to say whether there was much chance that would have been Akron, and he did say it was "almost 100 percent" Abreu wouldn't be with the Zips in 2013-14. A 5'10 native of Puerto Rico, Abreu averaged 10.3 points and 6 assists per game in 2012-13 before his arrest in the final week of the regular season. During his breakout season in 2011-12, Dambrot said Abreu had a chance to become the best guard of the coach's tenure at Akron. Before the arrest Abreu was featured prominently in the program's marketing campaign for last season. Akron has won two straight MAC regular-season titles and has been to the NCAA tournament three times since 2009.
