Vanderbilt currently has one of the best shooters in the country in guard John Jenkins on their roster. While 6′-5″ A.J. Astroth of Faith Baptist (FL) isn’t in Jenkins’ league as a long range assasin, there aren’t many players that are. Like Jenkins, though, Astroth is a deadly outside shooter, and he became the second member of the Commodores 2012 recruiting class on Monday.
After starring at Wharton (FL) as a high school senior, Astorth didn’t get the scholarship offers he wanted, and took to the grassroots basketball circuit, playing for Florida power Team Breakdown. He was absolutely terrific as a designated shooter and all-around smooth player in several events for Team Breakdown, catching the eyes of many college basketball head coaches. Astroth is a small forward at 6′-5″, and a solid lefty scorer.
