It was just earlier on Wednesday that we praised the Louisville Cardinals for a heartwarming gesture after it was announced that the team would be wearing special warm-ups during its Final Four game against Wichita State this weekend in tribute of Kevin Ware, who suffered a devastating, gruesome leg injury during the team’s NCAA Tournament game on Sunday. Now comes word that the greedy NCAA — or more specifically, Louisville and Adidas — appear to be attempting to make a soulless money-grab by capitalizing on Kevin Ware’s heartbreaking ordeal via the sale of a t-shirt. In an utterly despicable example of utter exploitation bereft of any ethics and appears to aspire only to engaging in the mindless pursuit of the almighty dollar, the above t-shirt now is available for sale on Louisville’s official athletics site. Wow. Screenshot via uoflsports.com: That’s right, for the tidy sum of $24.99, you too can be a cog in the NCAA’s Exploitative Money-Making Machine. A small price to pay to be part of something so colossally, perversely and shamefully sinister. Perhaps all the vitriol contained in this post will be all for naught, an excessive self-righteous overreaction after we later learn that proceeds from the sale of the shirt will pay Ware’s medical bills, benefit some charity or fund a scholarship program, although that’s highly unlikely. And even if that does occur, it will have only been done as a knee-jerk reaction to the imminent controversy that the sale of this shirt should create.
