The news that Ryan Kelly would be out indefinitely leads to a number of questions for the Blue Devils going forward until (if?) he can return. Whether he misses two weeks, four weeks or the rest of the season, Duke has a huge hole to fill not only on the court, but off it. So, who fills in at the power forward position, replacing Kelly’s 28 minutes a game? This is not a simple answer, as Kelly impacts the game in so many ways. While he defends the opposing team’s power forward when he’s in the game with Mason Plumlee, on offense he operates more like a small forward. Josh Hairston started the second half against Clemson and can provide some of the defensive intensity and especially the big body that Kelly does, but he is limited offensively. Especially on the perimeter. Alex Murphy, when his shot is on, has the most similar profile to Kelly in terms of being an outside-in player on the offensive end but is well behind both Kelly and Hairston on the defensive side of the ball.
