For the second time in 10 days an ambulance was sent to the home of Texas Tech head basketball coach Billy Gillispie Tuesday night. Gillispie is currently on leave from the school as it investigates his leadership of the program.

Jeff Baker, a sergeant with the Lubbock Police Department, said Tuesday that an emergency call came from Gillispie’s home at 6 p.m. and an ambulance was sent. In a text message to the Associated Press late Tuesday, the 52-year-old claimed he would be heading to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota for high blood pressure and other things.

Texas Tech spokesman Blayne Beal has confirmed that Gillispie informed athletic director Kirby Hocutt that he was going to Minnesota to receive treatment.

Hocutt claimed that Gillispie is on indefinite sick leave and is no longer making day-to-day decisions regarding the basketball program. On top of that, it appears the former Kentucky coach is actually on his way out with the school. Hocutt and Gillispie are supposed to sit down and talk about his role with the school at some point in the near future. Obviously that meeting will be postponed.

On August 31, Gillispie called 911 and was taken to the University Medical Center in Lubbock. That was the day he and Hocutt were originally supposed to meet and discuss allegations that he had been mistreating his players. Gillispie was reprimanded by the school in January for excessive practice-time violations.

In addition to that, Texas Tech’s top returning scorer, Jordan Tolbert, has said he doesn’t want to play for the Red Raiders if Gillispie returns to coach the team.

Gillispie’s assistant coaches are currently running the team in his absence with Hocutt’s oversight.

Really it looks like Gillispie is on the verge of being fired and his health problems could give Texas Tech and Hocutt an easy way to break off the relationship gently.
