My respect for Tubby Smith just went through the roof. No it’ s not because he wanted his fans to avoid spitting superlatives at Ohio State. It’s because his fans were disrespecting the game and he did his part to show his student body that it isn’t respected. Meanwhile, Bo Ryan to my knowledge, has not addressed his fans about physically spitting on opposing players at the Kohl Center. Keep it up Bo, you filthy grinch you. Hopefully when it’s all said and done we’ll be spitting out a victory at the Value Center against you the right way. No saliva needed in Columbus!

Michael Arace with The Columbus Post Dispatch brings us his thoughts this morning on the senior imprint in last night’s win against Illinois. The big name obviously is David Lighty who completely took over the game in the second half. Arace brings us a wonderful quote from Thad Matta stating how underrated David Lighty has been over the past five years on campus. Agreed completely. It’s good to see Ohio State’s leader back on track after a rough patch of games the last few weeks.

I made the comment early on, that what we saw tonight was exactly what many Illini fans, and critics, have been asking for all season: playing the younger kids more, playing up tempo and free, changing up the defense, and that we would still probably end up losing. A commenter had it right though, when they said “I’d rather they play like this and lose by fifteen, than have them stand around and lose by 15.” I have to say I agree with them wholeheartedly. I am not “giving up” on this season, but at the same time, I know this team isn’t going to be winning the Big Ten, and there isn’t a whole lot of reason to continue to play the same players, expecting a change.

Hail to the Orange breaks down last night’s performance for the Illini and makes some solid points. It was interesting to see Bruce Webber go with a younger lineup, mix up some names and give these kids a chance to get better, despite being in the middle of a NCAA tourney hunt. If I were an Illini fan, I would be pretty excited about that. As Chris Maynard told us yesterday, it’s what Illinois fans have been asking for since the middle of the season, if not before. There is a bright future in Champaign. Even brighter if Bruce Webber opens up his bench and let’s the kids play.
