NEW ORLEANS - MARCH 20: Coach John Calipari of the Kentucky Wildcats talks to his team during the second round of the 2010 NCAA men's basketball tournament at the New Orleans Arena on March 20, 2010 in New Orleans, Louisiana. (Photo by Dave Martin/Getty Images)
On a recent recruiting trip, Missouri head coach Frank Haith overheard North Carolina head coach Roy Williams speaking with Kentucky’s head coach John Calipari. Williams mentioned he would be taking his North Carolina team to Maui in 2016. John Calipari says he’s not taking his team this year. The Maui Invitational is one of the premier holiday tournaments of the year, and who wouldn’t want to go to Hawaii? Traveling across the five time zones and heading to Maui just isn’t worth it to Calipari. Kentucky hasn’t been to Maui since 2010, when they were blown out in the finals by Connecticut. The invitations are renewed every four years, and Kentucky’s trip is due. Without the ‘Cats, the invitational itself won’t succumb to any troubles. They have plenty of high profile college programs that want, and will come to Hawaii. Kentucky will already have plenty of high profile competition due to Calipari’s scheduling tactics. Honestly, nobody loses here. Besides being in paradise, what can the Maui Invitational really do to benefit the ‘Cats? The travel from Lexington has to be brutal, and you don’t really stay there long enough to actually enjoy yourself. The invitational is always broadcast on ESPN, but Kentucky nor John Calipari have a problem with getting exposure. Will the recruits notice? I don’t think it will make any difference. A constant crop of #1 recruiting classes year after year will vouch for any notion this decision will hurt recruiting efforts. We’ve all known since the last time Calipari took his Kentucky team to Maui, he doesn’t like the trip. He may not ever go back to Maui as coach of the Wildcats. If things were his way, he wouldn’t even play a conference tournament. He doesn’t like those either, finding them almost pointless when the bigger prize of a national title is in his sights.
