The Courier-Journal has published a very controversial cartoon resembling a Nerlens Noel x-ray and a witty response by a fellow doctor. While the cartoon has received mixed reviews, the majority of the responses have been negative. Most feel the cartoon is very insensitive to the devastating injury of Kentucky’s star player. Others feel that it is not that big of a deal. Blame it on a tough season, the shock of losing Noel, or just insensitivity? I personally believe cartoons are supposed to be humorous, but I don’t find anything funny about this one in particular. Obviously, I am biased because I’m a fan of the ‘Cats and the cartoon looks to be poking fun at a serious injury to a beloved player. If you notice, on the bottom right of the cartoon it says “Get” and the rest is cut off. The cartoonist said “Get well soon, Nerlens”. While I don’t think this was malicious, I don’t agree with it’s publication. In his defense, Courier Journal beat writer Kyle Tucker, who covers Kentucky athletics put out this statement on his Twitter account: “For the record, no one runs editorial articles by me. And I disagree with that one.” Kentucky fans may also be sensitive to the depiction due to being on the wrong end of another cartoon just last year. The Lexington Herald Leader rustled some feathers last year with this cartoon (pictured below) depicting John Calipari’s trophy case. The cartoonist, Joel Pett, is a graduate of Indiana University. What do you think about the cartoon? Let me know in the comments section or tweet it to me at @BrianLewis_SP. I’d love to hear your responses. John Calipari’s oldest daughter Erin, has made her own cartoon in response to the one from the Courier Journal.
