It had been rumored for several weeks that junior basketball player Dallas Elmore would be leaving the program, and indeed, we learned this weekend that he will. His final Boston College career stats are as follows: 77 games played, 13.9 mpg, 3.0 ppg, 1.4 rpg, 0.6 apg.
Clearly, those are the kind of numbers that can be replaced; that’s not what’s at issue. The fact of the matter is that Dallas Elmore is now the tenth player were are losing from last season going into next. In fact, just like I did for hockey, I’m making another chart, and this one tells a lot more shocking story:
If that doesn’t spell it all out for you, then I don’t know what will. The vast majority of the talent that Boston College had on the team is on the right side of that black dividing line. Again, this is not to say that our incoming freshmen won’t eventually be good players, but the 2011-2012 team will mostly BE freshmen. The Eagles are very much in the running to land transfer Allen Huddleston from Pacific, but even if they do, he will be of no use to us in ’11-’12.
Take another look at the “Reggie-less roster” from several weeks ago, right after we learned that Reggie Jackson would be leaving. Here are a few things that have not changed since Elmore’s departure was announced:
Not only is Matt Humphrey now a starter, he’s the best (NCAA) veteran player on the team. Who knew that some bench player we picked up as a transfer would end up in this position. Lead your troops on the court, Matt.
That 0-fer recruiting class Al had still hurts. I hate to belabor the point, but every time we lose a player like this, I think back to several years ago when our former coach pulled in no recruits in a particular year. If I’m not mistaken, that phantom class would be entering the upperclassmen realm, so we could have really used them.
We’re going to be really bad next year. I think that’s basically a given.
Here is what has changed, and it’s not much:
Boston College is now virtually guaranteed to start at least three freshmen. Elmore might have scooped up a spot by default, but now that he’s gone, it would seem that a majority of our starters on opening day will be playing in their first-ever NCAA game. Add that to likely starter Matt Humphrey, who has also not worn the maroon and gold.
Senior Day can be renamed “Peter Rehnquist Day.” Why not? He’s the only one left now. Of course, we’ll probably be 3-12 in the ACC by then and very few people will be there to see it, but he’ll get plenty of individual attention that day.
