Play is Under Review:
I've noticed something going on with Tide fans the last couple of weeks that we need to address. It all became quite clear during halftime of Alabama's win over Mississippi State Saturday night.
Just in case you just woke up from a coma, the Tide is now 11-0, has clinched a spot in the SEC championship, is ranked #1 in the nation and has a legitimate shot at the national championship.
During halftime of the game, there was a man walking behind me in the stadium. Here is his exact quote.
"We Suck!"
Now, I have a feeling alcohol may have been involved, so I just kept walking. But I really wanted to turn around and say something to him. And then I thought, nah, I'll just get him back with my ramblings on the blog. (YA! That will get him!)
My real thoughts were, "I'd like to introduce you to my friend who's a Mississippi State fan. He'll trade places with you right now if you'd like." And I had many more thoughts, but who cares, we're not terrible. So I can get over it.
Do you remember the movie Karate Kid? Do you remember how dominate the Cobra Kai looked in the final tournament? They won with style. Daniel, he just kept winning, even though it was ugly sometimes. But he still won.
And I think that is what is going on with Alabama right now. Everyone sees Florida winning big and they think, "Man, why don't we dominate like that?". Suddenly, Bama fans are getting concerned about what will happen on down the line. So they complain about running the ball so much, even though in the fourth quarter they have their opponents worn out. They'll complain that John Parker Wilson is not throwing to some "wide open" receivers, even though he's cut down his interceptions this year.
(Here's a quick tangent. Before you assume a receiver is wide open, watch where the safety is. Those guys can cover a lot of ground in the 5 seconds it takes the ball to get there. Also, make sure there is not a 300 lb lineman in the quarterbacks face.)
What's even more interesting, is if you ask Bama fans about the philosophy of having a dominate running game and a strong defense they will tell you they love it. But when they see it in action, they complain about it at the game. Just ask Gene Stallings, he was winning 10 games a year and folks were complaining about his style. During the game, no one likes seeing a couple of three and outs, but it's just going to happen.
Hey Bama fans, relax. Enjoy the season. These don't come around every year. Don't be afraid of the Cobra Kai, (I mean Florida) we'll get our chance in three weeks. First, let's savor the 11-0 season and see what happens against Auburn.
And if you think I used this analogy, just so I link to the great Joe Esposito hit, you're right...
