The top-ranked Indiana Hoosiers grabbed a critical 72-68 win over Michigan State on Tuesday night, but the Derrick Nix-Cody Zeller undercard might have to be scored a draw. Zeller and Nix each delivered an … um … unpleasant shot to the other — Zeller first appeared to catch Nix in the groin with an (inadvertent?) elbow while driving to the basket, then Nix returned the favor later when he appeared to smack Zeller below the waist. The officials reviewed that latter incident to determine if Nix should be given a Flagrant-1 or Flagrant-2. However, after taking a second look at the replay, they opted not to make a call. There also was no call on Zeller’s drive, which resulted in a layup as Nix tumbled to the deck. First up, Zeller’s shot on Nix (Note: The title on the video was provided by the user who uploaded it, not The Detroit Sports Site): And then, courtesy of The Big Lead (for now, at least, until someone inevitably uploads the full video), Nix’s retaliation: ESPN’s Dick Vitale immediately began calling for some sort of foul against Nix on the second play — guest analyst and ex-Michigan State star Magic Johnson seemed to agree. “There’s no place for that,” Vitale exclaimed as ESPN rolled the replay. “No place for that in basketball. Play the game, play with good sportsmanship, play the game. Don’t ruin it because of some stupidity, and some immature action.” It is possible that the Big Ten will review the low blows, but any disciplinary action has to be considered extremely unlikely.
