#6 Duke 61, #17 Virginia 58I don't mean to pick on Seth Davis on my twitter account so often. He's not really any worse than most of the other television analysts. Like most of them, he doesn't understand tempo-free stats. As I like to say, if you tell your team to hold the ball for an extra ten seconds on every offensive possession then you're going to give up fewer points, but it doesn't mean your defense got better. Nobody argues that Pomeroy stats or any of the other tempo-free stats are the gospel, or that the team rated the #1 Pomeroy offense or defense is definitely the best offense/defense in the nation, but it's just sad how wrong some of the television analysts are. Seth Davis started out last week complaining about Duke's offense. When somebody on twitter pointed out to him that they were the #4 rated offense in Pomeroy, Davis responded: "You realize how little that means? Watch. Them. Play." Yeah, Seth Davis, I guess I have to watch ...

Duke passes biggest test of season

DURHAM, N.C. --- Duke got a stiff challenge Thursday night from a team that proved it can go toe-to-toe with one of the top teams in the nation. Virginia came into the evening's affair with just one blemish on its record and riding a 12-game winning streak. But there were more skeptics than believers in the Cavaliers until possibly tonight, which is why Duke's growth in...

Virginia's success stems from their stauch defense

CHARLOTTESVILLE — Akil Mitchell has heard the gripes. Friends, family members and students, at some point, have said the same thing about this year's Virginia basketball team. He's got his response ready. "I've heard, 'You guys are boring to watch,' and all that stuff," the sophomore said. "But we're getting ...

Streak ends for No. 16 UVa in 61-58 loss to Duke

No. 16 Virginia needed just one 3-pointer down the stretch to force overtime. When none of them would fall, the Cavaliers wound up leaving Cameron Indoor Stadium once again with a loss. No. 8 Duke snapped Virginia's 12-game winning streak Thursday night by beating the Cavaliers 61-58 after they missed a pair of 3s in the closing seconds that would have tied it. ''You...

Duke Holds On To Beat Virginia 61-58

A win is a win and there is no shame in playing the No. 17 team in the country close on your home court, but Duke has got some work to do. The Blue Devils had just enough and Virginia just didn't have enough time to catch up as Duke improves to 14-2 (2-0 ACC) with the 61-58 win. The first half of this game belonged to the Cavaliers and especially Mike Scott who was simply unstoppable...

ACC Morning Linkfest 1/13

On Thursday night, Boston College got into the win column with a home win over Clemson 59-57. After trouncing FSU at home over the weekend, Brad Brownell has to be scratching his head at the road loss at Boston College. It's just another example of the difficulty in winning road games in the ACC regardless of the opponent. In the late game, Duke held on to defeat...

The Plumlee factor

DURHAM, N.C. -- The Virginia Cavaliers seemingly had Duke where they wanted them as the teams entered the second half. With a four point, 32-28, lead, Tony Bennett's team was dictating the pace, and the Blue Devils had no answer for Mike Scott.

Jones: Duke-Virginia report card

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke's 61-58 victory over Virginia on Thursday night was hardly a masterpiece if fluidity and finesse are your cup of tea. But it was a fine game that required both teams play at a high level and to reach into their toughness banks to grind out a game that should serve both well down the road. The Blue Devils (14-2, 2-0 ACC) made some nice defensive adjustments...
