The first conference game for Dayton resulted in an overtime win over Duquesne. There are plenty of observations and commentary on this game, but most importantly we should feel lucky and relieved to have won this game. For those who missed the game: UD was leading by 1 point with 5 seconds left, when Chris Wright fouled Jason Duty on a three-pointer. Duty hit the first shot but missed the next two – resulting in overtime. UD opened up overtime with a 7-0 run and put the game away at 78-72. Playing poorly on your home court, relying on the opposing team to miss two of three free throws, and shooting 6-for-14 on free throws down the stretch are a few reasons to walk away from this game displeased. We found a way to get the win, so consider me temporarily satisfied. This is the kind of nail biter game that we’re used to from UD at this point – conference game, expected victory, poor play, close win (see: 2008 against Fordham, La Salle, etc).
