They all pitched their schools to Ray McCallum Jr. and told him how valuable he could be to their programs. After weighing offers from UCLA, Florida, Arizona, Minnesota, Kansas and Oklahoma, McCallum Jr. decided to play for the Coach that never left his living room, his dad. He take his talents to Detroit. Yes Detroit, the school where Dick Vitale had coached and the school where his dad, Ray McCallum Sr. was the coach.
As a freshman, he struggled to find his way in the Horizon league trying to out-do players on Butler, Cleveland State and Valparaiso. The Michigan’s Gatorade prep player of the year and McDonalds All American in 2010 was trying to make his dad happy, not his coach.
