Fighting Illini Basketball – With the 2014 recruiting class pretty much locked up, head coach John Groce and the rest of the Illinois Fighting Illini coaching staff are looking to sign some of the top recruits among the 2015 class. Leading the class, are Simeon High School small forward, D.J. Williams, and Plainfield East High School shooting guard, Aaron Jordan. Both of which are four-star recruits according to rivals.com. With even bigger goals in mind, here are some updates on some of the top targets for the Illini. PG Jalen Brunson With desperate need for a true point guard, Illinois is looking to find their answer in-state. Jalen Brunson out of Stevenson High School is one of the quickest rising recruits across the country. He even has recently been invited to the USA U18 tryouts. Brunson lead Stevenson to a 30-1 record,  with the team only loss coming in the state semi-finals to powerhouse Whitney Young and Jahlil Okafor. Brunson is currently ranked 32 in the country as well as third in the State of Illinois for the 2015 class. Currently, Brunson has offers from 15 colleges, but most believe the most likely contenders are Michigan, Michigan State and Illinois. Illinois has advantages over the other Big Ten competitors in location and immediate playing time, which is something that according to Jalen’s father, Rick Brunson, is important to Jalen. 247 Sports has 18% of the experts picking Illinois or Michigan State for this young star, while 64% for the front-runner of Michigan. PF/C Elijah Thomas Recent bad luck with in-state recruiting has led the Illini coaching staff to try their luck in the state of Texas. Ranked number one in the state of Texas and number nine in the country by Rivals.com, stands 6’9″ power forward Elijah Thomas. Thomas has been a target for the Illini for a while now and has been a top prospect for even longer. Thomas has noted that his favorite college basketball player used to be former Illinois center, Meyers Leonard. Along with that, Thomas has shown much love for the Illini over social media and even though not having a formal list of schools, he recently told reporter Taylor Rooks: “If I had a top 5, Illinois would be on it.” Other favorites include SMU, Baylor and Texas. Hopefully, if Thomas one day chooses to play for the Illini, he can bring along good friend and also highly recruited, point guard, Jawun Evans. Thomas will cut down his list to ten schools within the next week and be sure to see the orange and blue on it. PF Carlton Bragg Out of Clevand, Ohio, the 10th nationally ranked player by rivals.com is power forward Carlton Bragg. While in-state school of Ohio State is a likely favorite, along with Kentucky, coach Groce has put in a lot of effort for this lengthy prospect. Bragg is a mix of power and athleticism, which combine for a true athlete. While this is not one of the most likely commits at the moment for the Illini, coach Groce has proven he can turn around commits in a hurry. Other Notable Recruits Along with the three main targets of Illinois there are many other prospects the Illini would love to have. These include recruits: SF Ed Morrow PG Eric Davis PF Josh Sharma C Diamond Stone Illinois hopes for better luck for the 2015 recruiting class after the Cliff Alexander experience. With already a great start to the class, expect big things from coach John Groce and the rest of the Illini coaching staff. ————- Coby Rabushka Guest Columnist The post Fighting Illini Basketball Recruiting Rumors appeared first on Sports Mockery.
