Fighting Illini News - The Fighting Illini continue the search for a point guard beyond the 2014-2015 season. Despite not having an open scholarship slot for the upcoming year, Illinois has contacted another transfer. Maryland point guard Roddy Peters announced on April 8th that he will be transferring from the Terrapins. The Fighting Illini wasted no time, as they have already ¨reached out¨ to Peters. The potential landings spots for Peters include Illinois, Rutgers, Tennessee, Miami, Florida State, Memphis, and Virginia Tech. Are the Fighting Illini Too Desperate? Peters may be the the worst fit out of all the Fighting Illini point guard targets. Coming out of high school he was a top 50 recruit, but during conference play in the ACC, Peters played 12 minutes per game, he didn’t make a single three pointer and he had only a 20% assist rate. For comparison, Fighting Illini target Maurice Watson had a 49% assist rate. Roddy Peters is essentially Jaylon Tate, but with two fewer years of eligibility, and if Peters joins the Fighting Illini he forces a player off the team. There’s a good chance that Maryland could restrict Peters from transferring to Big Ten schools as Maryland joins the Big Ten during the 2014-2015 season. Fighting Illini Basketball Scholarship Grid The Fighting Illini are desperate for a point guard, that much is clear, but the recruitment of Peters seems too desperate. To force out a player with a similar skill level who has more eligibility and has been devoted to the Fighting Illini since day one is wrong. John Groce needs a point guard, but he needs to tread carefully. ———————————————————— Source(s): Washington Post, IllinoisLoyalty, ESPN, umterps.com, illini-nation.net Photo(s): ESPN Author informationAlex ErwinStudent at Freeburg High School, home of the Midgets.
