Israeli powerhouse Maccabi Tel Aviv have signed former Duke Blue Devils guard Jon Scheyer for the upcoming Israeli Basketball Super League season. Because Scheyer is Jewish, he will not count against the league cap on foreign players.
After a stellar career at Duke, where he finished ninth on the all-time points list and led the team to the 2010 NCAA National Championship, Scheyer went undrafted in the 2010 NBA draft, and suffered a devastating eye injury while playing on the Miami Heat’s 19-man Las Vegas summer league team.
Now he heads to Israel, and one of the most successful European basketball teams ever. Maccabi Tel Aviv went 26-1 last year in the Israeli league, were runners-up in the European championship to Panathinaikos, and have won the European title five times in their history.
