CORAL GABLES — It's been years since the annual football showdown pitting Florida State and Miami was as significant as Saturday afternoon's basketball game between the two schools.
FSU, ranked No. 15, is tied with ACC heavyweights Duke and North Carolina for first place in the conference standings and is gunning for the program's first league championship.
Miami (15-7, 6-3 ACC) has won five consecutive ACC games, a team record, and can move into third place Saturday if it beats the Seminoles (16-7, 7-2).
Not bad for a couple of football schools.
"We've got to keep it rolling," UM center Reggie Johnson said. "It feels good to be winning, but I'm not thinking we've arrived."
To get there, or at least better position themselves for a potential NCAA Tournament berth, the Hurricanes will have to beat the 'Noles.
For the first time in their ACC history the Miami Hurricanes have won 5 straight conference games. And at 6-3 they're well poised to have their first ever winning conference record. First year coach Jim Larranaga has them focused on defense (4th in ACC games), but it's their offense that is becoming the difference. They've scored more than a point per possession in all five of their recent wins, and in 6 of the past 7 games. This is significant because of the roster limitations this team faced early in the season. Reggie Johnson missed the first nine games due to his off season knee surgery. DeQuan Jones missed the first ten games due to the investigation into recruiting allegations. And several other players have missed time due to various minor issues.
Less than 48 hours after a disappointing 64-60 loss on the road to a lowly Boston College team, it's safe to say that No. 15 Florida State is still very irked by its performance on Wednesday night.
FSU turned the ball over 14 times and shot just 39.6 percent from the floor as its seven-game winning streak was snapped against the 8-16 Eagles. FSU will try to get back on track at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday as the streaking Miami Hurricanes come to Tallahassee.
Junior guard Michael Snaer, who led the team in scoring with 16 points despite shooting just 6 of 18 from the floor, said the Seminoles didn't have the focus needed to win a road Atlantic Coast Conference game.
