Dean Edwards Smith was born 80 years ago, and while he is known for the many victories on the basketball court, he should be also known for the many things he has done outside of the game. In his 36 year as the head coach for the Tar Heels coach Smith took his squads 11 times to the Final Four and twice won it all, the first time with a freshman named Michael Jordan! He holds the ninth best winning percentage (77/6%) of any men’s basketball coach, while having had a 96.6% graduation rate. I could go on and on about all the great accomplishments that coach Smith had, but the reality are two, there are too many and he is not the type of man to want to flaunt all that he did. Let’s just say this when talking about the man who brought UNC to the top, if there was a Mount Rushmore of the HCs in NCAABB he would be on it without a doubt!
Happy birthday Coach, happy birthday!
