Zane Johnson scored 18 of his season-high 29 points in the first half as Hawaii defeated New Mexico State 91-87 on Saturday night. Johnson, a senior, shot 7 of 13 from 3-point range and was 10 of 17 from the field to help the Rainbow Warriors (11-8, 3-2 WAC) snap a two-game losing streak. Bandja Sy had 17 points and Hamidu Rahman 16 to lead the Aggies (14-6, 4-1), who had won their last six and nine of their previous 10 games. Hawaii led 71-52 after Hauns Brereton's layup midway through the second half. However, New Mexico State made a late charge and pulled within four points several times in the final minute, but got no closer. Joston Thomas had 17 points and nine rebounds and Vander Joaquim 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Rainbow Warriors. Johnson (stomach flu) did not play in Hawaii's four-point loss to Louisiana Tech on Thursday.
